Zach Vertin is an American writer, foreign policy expert, and former diplomat; he has spent the last twelve years working in international peace and conflict issues, not least in South Sudan. He is currently a Lecturer at Princeton University and a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Doha Center. He previously served in the Obama Administration as a Senior Adviser to the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan and Sudan South Sudan, and prior to that he was a Senior Analyst for the International Crisis Group. I picked up this book without knowing much about South Sudan, or African politics in general, and so was a bit intimidated. But the author ably brought me along, telling a fascinating story with fully-developed characters, life-and-death drama, and Machiavellian politics. Mr. Vertin clearly knows the subject very well, and his insider perspective on the events covered in the book make him a great narrator. It's ultimately a heartbreaking, tragic story, but it provides important lessons for American foreign policy -- namely, be clear-eyed about the need for stable political institutions and loyal partners when nation-building, no matter how righteouss the cause may be. Great read -- highly recommend!

This was a beautiful book that really refueled my interest for Statistics (which I've been struggling to start learning...even though I know calculus and LOVE mathematics)...but it really caught my eye because it goes into detail about the R statistical programming language.The first few chapters get you going on a specific mindset of how to interpret data, which is VERY important to keep throughout the entire reading of this book.After that groundwork is established, you are taken on a really cool journey of some Excel features (don't freak out...those of you who don't know excel proficiently will be fine in the hands of this book) that you never would've believed were there! You can even use Google Docs to do the same things if you don't have a valid copy of Excel!Finally, R comes into play with all its glory...I would've loved for a deeper dive with this technology, but there are several other books out there in which you can get down and dirty with R (http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Programming-Statistical-Software/dp/1593273843/ and http://www.amazon.com/Cookbook-OReilly-Cookbooks-Paul-Teetor/dp/0596809158/ are my favorites and I own them both on my kindle).I hope that eliminates all your FUD's (Fears, Uncertainties, and Doubts)...go and grab this book RIGHT NOW! You'll be blown away with what you'll be able to do after you read everything here!P.S. It only takes about a week and a half to get through it going at a nice, slow, and comfortable pace...if you're HUNGRY like I was, you can knock it out in about 4 days.

This book provides an excellent, approachable introduction to data analysis. Although most experienced professionals or advanced students will find this text trivial, it serves as a god starting point for those who are completely new to data analysis. The text provides numerous interactive examples using Excel and R, but the examples do not cover these tools in any great depth. If you're looking to learn more about statistics, data analysis and data mining, this book is a good starting point.

Different problems need different methods to be solved properly. This book takes various examples and lets the reader work through the problems. It is actually fun to read this book. Very well explained. Of course, not all the problems worked 100%, but I have not read a book with examples and problems that all work. Especially, some of my R did not work too well. Other than that it is a great book, and a great way to learn about data analysis.

I got the book promptly. It has that softbound textbook feel. but good binding not cheap or ready to fall apart. the intormation in it so far seems interesting and well organized. its in the "head first format" which means there is a lot of nice visual lay out and side notes and some graphics to make understanding the concepts by seeing them when possible. I like that format. It is still pretty clean and gets to the point. but I have only read and used so much of it at this point so I cannot go much farther into the content than that. -- in short I think it is a solid book to get if one wants to better understand how to interpret social science numbers, or other scientific numbers that they are shown in a way that they are wise to various ways that data can be spiked and spiced. how in depth I cannot comment on as I have not fully digested the book. But it is a book that is designed to be both read and used as a topical reference. And it has the "Head First" style keeping things clean but providing insightful commentary, context and graphical illustrations where it might really speed up or enhance understanding of a particular idea or complicated example. it also uses bolding in areas where you can pay attention to the new vocabulary you might want to learn in order to lay the ground work for even more technical education in data analysis. it even has a chapter where it goes over some of the more obscure plug ins for excel that are there for helping a person analyze data. I would basically treat this book as a nice survey of both the human technical sides of data analysis. it also covers things like data collection or effective data presentation, and as I said it refers to several readily available tools like excel for example and how they can be used by someone who wanted to know how to leverage their computer in order tame and extract meaning from data they have been given to interpret. -- I think that its a useful primer that is like a survey course in the subject sans the professor. But how good each section is I cannot comment on as I have only started with the book for a several weeks. but what I did read I found completely intelligible and because I am not a total novice at looking at Data, there were times I could use its nice formatting to skip past explanations I did not need because I already was familiar with them. If I fall in love with the book I may come back and say so and make my stars 5 instead of a 4 but at this point I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wanted a nice primer that went into to a very serviceable level of detail for a primer or survey type information source.

Head First continues to be my series of choice on any subject.I have to agree that sometimes its too basic, but you still have the option of quickly skimming through till you reach topics needing attention.

This book does a thorough job covering the concept of data analysis, touching on both the soft side (requirements gathering, mental models) and the technical side (Excel, R). Like other "Head First" titles, it does it in an entertaining manner that makes reading the book a joy. The material is presented more like an enlightening conversation with an intelligent teacher than a brain dump of facts and theories.

I have long thought that the most effective teaching method is to use a "present a problem" approach and let the reader's curiosity drive the learning.This book uses this approach.It's enjoyable and has helped me understand the basics of data analysis quickly.

Good introduction to the basics of data analytics, but if you are looking for more depth, look elsewhere. This is a good starting point for a beginner.

This book accurately describes the process being accused of abuse/neglect, and the overreaching/abusive practices of the the CPS system and the juvenile court. I have a personal, very similar story. Prior to being unjustly reported to an abuse hotline, I never really thought of the CPS as anything but a good agency, important to our society, helping abused children. The reality is, CPS is not an agency concerned for the welfare of children... That couldn't be further from the truth. Because I was not as "well off" as the families in this book, I could not afford, or even locate for that matter, a defense attorney that could or would stand up against the CPS and the state. My ordeal lasted over two years. My children were held hostage in a state that was not my residency, and therefore I was held hostage, as I was not going to go home without them. I was separated from my children while having to prove my innocence, rather than the state having to prove their allegations. I am a retired military veteran, and what I experienced in war was far less traumatic than what the CPS did to my family. Never in my life had I been in trouble, or had any drug or alcohol issues. I had only one traffic ticket in my 25+ years of driving, and that was my only encounter with the law. I would never hurt anyone, let alone my children. I was totally unprepared for, and naive about, what was about to happen, when the CPS came and seized my children while they were at school. This review is not a place where I can tell my entire story, however, I just wanted to emphasize how accurate this book is in explaining what truly happens inside this system that does more harm than good. I recommend this book to anyone who truly cares about the welfare of children, the sovereignty of the family unit, and your basic parental rights. The everyday person, who has never dealt with this system, has no idea how destructive they are to families, how there is little regard for finding the truth, and how innocent people are held hostage by a system that operates unchecked. One thing that I wish this book had touched more on is the monetary incentives that drive this system and it's industrial complex, under the Title IV-E program. The unlawful seizing of children will continue to happen as long as the federal government is monetarily rewarding each state based on how many children it can put in foster care, and how many children are adopted out. Believe it or not, fit parents can lose their parental rights, and their children, forever, because they don't have the means to stop the CPS from adopting them out into another family. Sadly, reunification is not a priority for the CPS/State, because they receive a much better payout by keeping children in the system as long as they can. All the players in this industrial complex support and cover for each other, going to any length to prove their case, even to the point of outright lies in their reports, and perjury. They want to secure their federal funds, keep their jobs, win cases, continue to operate unchecked, and ever expand their reach. They do not care what damage they do to people's lives. It has been several years since my ordeal, and I can attest to the fact that the pain and suffering inflicted on my family has done permanent and irreparable harm. Although, in the end, the CPS was forced to return my children to me, in the process, I was shamed, humiliated, lost my reputation, lost my marriage and my home, and had to live in a camper in another state while the case worked it's way slowly through all the hearings. I lost my faith in the legal system and developed a healthy fear of the power of the government. It's by the grace of God, a lucky turn of events, a non-CPS affiliated therapist, and the appointment of a new judge, that brought my case to an end with the return of my children. Not all families that were in our position were so fortunate. My children and I lost a period of time in our lives together, that should have been spent making happy memories. Instead it was time wasted on this horror story. It's almost an unbelievable story, what my children and I went through. I don't think I would have believed such a story, had I not lived it myself. Unfortunately, it happens all the time. It takes one phone call to forever change your life. Is intervention needed in true abuse cases? Yes, it is. However, the unethical practices, sloppy work, and the way in which this system operates in secrecy, in closed civil court, is a recipe for disaster for those wrongly accused. There are no checks and balances, and their reckless power to come in and control your life is unmatched to anything I've ever seen. Also, there is no recourse or recompense for those who have suffered at their hands. It is very difficult and costly to challenge the CPS/State at the Federal level, to seek real justice. Most families that have lived this nightmare, would just thank God for the return of their children, and invest time into piecing their lives back together, rather than take on another long battle with the government. I apologize for this long post, but I am very passionate about this subject and wish that no other innocent family had to endure this nightmare.

I purchased two of these cookbooks for my nieces, both cousins are 10 years old. Once I got, I ordered one for me. It is a wonderful cookbook for young bakers and contains information that is helpful for the seasoned baker. I wanted the information regarding certain ingredients, like baking soda vs baking powder. Simple recipes for the younger new baker.

Great cookbook that bridges the gap between too simple recipes for little kids and a high quality baking book. Lisa Huff explains the how and why of baking in a matter of fact way that appeals to older kids. Her recipes are easy to follow, but not "kid food." The chocolate chip cookie recipe is the best I've ever tried! It's so well written that it would be perfect for any novice baker looking to learn the ins and outs of baking.

This book is perfectly constructed for teaching little ones about the joy of baking. My 8-year-old son loves it. It starts out with a few pages about baking basics, essential ingredients, and kitchen safety. I asked him to read through this section before we actually made anything. I expected him to think this was a terrible chore, but he enjoyed it and was asking good questions. It then moves on to a series of 7 recipes that teach basic baking skills. Work your way through these and you essentially complete a little Baking 101 course, learning how to use the oven, crack and separate eggs, melt chocolate, etc. Then you can move on to more advanced recipes like the zebra cake (pictured). My son was thrilled to produce something so cool and delicious. This book isn't just a collection of kid friendly, easy recipes. It's a very well thought out instructional book that progresses kids from total beginners to skilled junior chefs.

One of the best cookbooks for older children. It looks and feels like an adult cookbook with handy tips and professional "secrets." It also has common fails in the sidebar to help you figure out what may go wrong. I've purchased both Kid Chef books and neither have stayed more than a day or two on the shelves in my classroom library. My fifth graders give this two thumbs WAY UP!

Got this as a Christmas present for my younger niece (4th grade). She loves it so much her older sister (6th grade) has already requested a copy for her bday in February! ((Because you know--they can't possibly share... *eyeroll*)). When I called yesterday cinnamon muffins were in the works.

This was a gift for my 8-year old daughter who loves to cook. She loves the book and has already tried several recipes. I personally don't think it is geared towards kids. The format and the wording and instructions. I would think it would be a bit more clear, easy to read, with simple step-by-step instructions, but it is designed like any other adult cookbook that we have. The recipes are great though, so that is a plus.

Not too easy and not too hard, these recipes were just right for our young baker. You get to make fun stuff and to take pride in having it all come out well. G'daughter originally started out with basic projects and then make it up as you go along projects, but this book gave her the ideas and directions to get more creative and advanced. And we get to sample the results so it's a winner all the way round.

My 12 yr old daughter jumped right into this book! She has marked at least a dozen pages and baked the bite sized brownies. She put a little too much batter into the mini muffin pan so they spilled over but decorated with an M & M. They popped right out and were DELISH! The only thing I helped her with was getting the hot pan out of the oven. She was insistent on me not knowing what she was making etc. This book is great! It has sections that explain so much beyond the recipes. She is loving everything about it AND her 13 yr old brother was her Sous chef! Perfect.

As a philosophical taoist among many other things I may not have gotten far with his exercises as of yet, but I can say that so far, it seems the admission is worth the price, especially if you've read and enjoyed John's other books ESPECIALLY the books of vampire's way to psychic Self Defense and Overthrow the Archon. It, so far, expands upon the previous books. When you get to the first exercises you realize he means business, one of the more difficult thought experiments I've worked with is the very first, intimidating, exercise I've dealt with to date, and trust me when I say that as I've dealt with a lot of very... Unconventional/unscripted... thought experiments in my day in pursuit of my path.I have yet to flesh out the rest of the work and expect to update this review accordingly.If you like John's prior books either buy this or the physical copy, you'll not be disappointed from what I can tell so far. The question you shouldn't ask is IF you should buy it, but, which would more suit your needs? It is a course book proper. Me? I sort of wish I'd bought the physical copy since I'd be able to access it more readily since there are places I can't have my phone.

I thought this book about alchemy would be super boring , but after reading it I'm ready to dive into alchemy now
