I bought this and gave it to a teenager as a gift. It is a very nicely designed and printed book but I did have the chance to go through it so I can really give my comment on the content. The recipient loves it so I assume it must be good!

This book collects lots of interesting maps and brief texts about them. I have several other similar books and this book is among the better ones. On a rainy day, someone interested in this topic could spend several hours being very pleasantly entertained paging through this book.

I purchased this as a gift for my Grandfather who has always been enamored by maps. This is a must have for the cartographer in your family. The detail in the historical evolution of the maps is stunning and can be enjoyed by those interested specifically in the map aspect as well as the history buff interested in the evolution of the nations whose original maps have shaped the world as we know it today.

Wonderful book.

Two very fine and beautiful books about maps appeared at the end of 2005, published within a month of each other. The other one is "The Map Book" edited by Peter Barber. I happened to discover "The Map Book" before "Mapping the World", although the latter was published first. Like "The Map Book", "Mapping the World" has at its center beautifully reproduced maps in chronological order with lively and informative texts and explanations. Unlike "The Map Book", "Mapping the World" has a single author of the texts, giving the latter a more unified voice and a greater sense of historical narrative. The curious reader may delve deeper into either book on any page and become engaged in the history, culture, and technology embodied in a particular map. Both books sit on my coffee table both for easy access and conspicuous display.

Very interesting for map lovers.

This was a lovely book on MAPPING. I was looking for a book with maps of the way things used to be to add to my ancient history study. If I were a person studying maps, it would have been great. It just was not what I personally needed.

A must have book for anyone that loves the history of maps and how they have changed during time.

Secrecy World pulls back the curtain on international criminal - or what should be criminal - tax evasion (oh, sorry, I mean tax avoidance) and the corrupt industries that make it possible. The book is focused through the lens of the blockbuster reporting of the Panama Papers, the enormous leak of internal documents from a Panamanian law firm, so we get the inside view from the trenches of international investigative journalism as well. It's a great read, incredibly detailed and full of can't-make-this-stuff-up characters and plots - my hat's off to Mr. Bernstein for weaving it together as a page-turner that kept me up late reading, and reaching for more first thing in the morning. Remarkable!

I have been slogging through this book for months wondering if the day will ever come that I read the final chapter. Like other reviewers have stated this is a fascinating subject and much overdue for exposure. Unfortunately Bernstein’s writing is so stilted and choppy the book is practically unreadable. He jumps from one sound bite to the next. It is more like a series of tweets than a book or a helpful expose. Bernstein follows a pedestrian narrative timeline: first this, then this happened. Good investigative journalism is overshadowed by a stilted play-by-play recounting of events. This book needs to be re-written.

Although the book is very informative, the writing style is a little bland. Thus, reading same can be laborious.

The Secrecy World reads like a fast-paced thriller with a deeply reported and intricately woven narrative. For anyone curious about this global gilded age we've arrived in and how we got here, the Secrecy World is your road map and Bernstein lays it all out. From the board rooms of Panama to the secret shell companies in the British Virgin Islands and beyond, the reader gets a crash course in how everyone from the Queen of England to multinational corporations avoid paying taxes and hide their cash. The reader also gets a fascinating behind the scenes look at how an international consortium of journalists breaks one of the biggest stories of the decade with the Panama Papers leak. For many years, I've admired Bernstein's tenacity in getting the story and his first-rate reporting skills, and with this book you won't be disappointed!

Jake Bernstein’s crystal-clear writing illuminates the dark world of illicit finance in a way that throws light on some of the most complex, shady global networks and nefarious transactions -- a true gift, and a true art. If you have ever paid honest taxes, or wondered how members of the arrogant super-rich avoid the same responsibility, this is the book for you. Bernstein, a lead reporter in the consortium of journalists that broke the revelations of the Panama Papers, describes from the inside the jaw-dropping collusion among law firms, politicians, royalty, Hollywood and sports celebrities that makes it all possible. And he does it in the style of the best reporters, with wit, color and hard facts that kept me turning page after page.

This is a book published at the perfect moment -- that is, while we are in the midst of Robert Mueller's special investigation. Bernstein has provided his readers with an essential primer for "following the money" and understanding the secretive culture of tax-evaders and political scoundrels. One needn't be a financial wizard to grasp the consequences for economies both large and small when, as described by the author, billions of dollars are routinely siphoned off by a relative handful of corrupt individuals whose principal occupation is self-enrichment.

I work in finance and thought this would be an interesting read. Unfortunately, I found it rather boring and anti-climatic. Informative and eye-opening if you have no idea this kind of tax evasion and money laundering exists. But I struggled to stay interested.

The author, Jake Bernstein, was one of the reporters who actually worked on the Panama Papers. His book centers around the leak of those documents, the efforts of many reporters around the world to analyse and publish them with coherence and meaning, and how the whole off shore world of shady finances works. His research, detail and exposition are first class, giving essentially a graduate course on the subject. The book is so detailed, and there are so many different characters involved, that it requires careful reading, but well worth it if you are interested in the subject.

#31,751 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book veers a bit from the vampire stories in that it's not so much a story weaved around the vamps, but they're more threaded in to the story. Of course, Eric is intent on discovering what happened in the brief (relatively speaking as his lifetime is measured in centuries) time that he spent at Sookie's home. That's pretty much it in terms of vamp involvement. Frankly, that led to some disappointment. Alcide, however, features prominently in this installment and we learn a lot more about Weres and shifters. It just feels like something's missing from Charlaine Harris' normal style. One thing that I noticed, and is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, is the increasing use of catch-ups. I understand that some people like to just jump into a series without starting with the first novel. The rest of us, however, shouldn't be punished for it and forced to read catch-ups constantly. It's such a digression in momentum and drives me bonkers! It's still a good read. I wish I had more feelings about Sookie and Alcide so that I could savor some of the scenes between them, but it just didn't seem like he really cares for her, other than wanting to get in her pants. Speaking of which, how many men are hot for Sookie now? It's getting a bit tiresome to hear of yet another admirer hopping on the Sookie fan train. Sookie's love life can only be spread so thinly until it'll shatter. I hope that she finds someone worthwhile soon.We also learn more about Claudine and her surly twin, Claude. Tragedy, as usual, seems to follow hotly on Sookie's heels. Surprisingly, after the author has spent so much time telling us how isolated Sookie's house is from pretty much everywhere (except Bill, who's handily just across the adjoining cemetery), the volunteer fire department manages to put out a fire in a historic home (aged wood burns quickly, doesn't it?) before any major damage is done to the majority of it, other than the kitchen, happily destroying any evidence from the whole Debbie Pelt slaying. Reality check, please. One last note on editing... once again, this book seems to be filled with missed errors. I understand that spell check corrects words, but if the wrong word is in the sentence, but it's spelled correctly, it's still an error.

Sookie and Jason are on edge just waiting to see if Jason makes a change at the full moon. Sookie is not used to having so many men want her. Bill will always care for her and Eric has seemed to always stay interested, Alcide likes Sookie so much he's ready for a committed relationship, Calvin is trying very hard to court Sookie but she just can't imagine living in Hotshot even if she thinks highly of Calvin, and...........Even with all of these men wanting her, Sookie is currently single. It seems a new evil has once again come to town because there have been multiple people shot. With no leads and not much evidence everyone is wondering who this shooter could be. During all of this drama and attention from so many men, Sookie is now friend to the pack and so she attends first the burial of a very important were. It seems as though Sookie will never have time to rest for there is an upcoming ritual to determine who will be the new pack leader of the pack Alcide is part of. It is very competitive and ritualized and Sookie feels a little fear but also a little awe for seeing an event that takes place so rarely. Again, the book ends with Sookie a few seconds from death and a kiss with one of her many beaus.....I've enjoyed the book thoroughly.

Now, how many different things can happen in one novel. Sookie, waitress at a bar, is a telepath, whose life used to be bedeviled by her hearing people's thoughts. Once she entered into the world of supernaturals--vampires, weres, shape-shifters, fairies--she came to use her power as a tool. This volume, # 5 in the series, sees her facing many challenges.First, several would-be or past boyfriends are showing their interest in her, including ex-lovers Bill (a vampire) and Eric (another vampire--and a boss) and bar owner Sam and one-time pretend boyfriend Alcide. Second, someone is shooting shapeshifters and weres--including one person actually killed. Third, someone is out to get Sookie, half burning her home to the ground (she would have perished in the flames but for some luck). Then, she gets shot (because she heard someone's unusual thoughts, she ducked in time to take the bullet in her shoulder rather than someplace where the wound would have been mortal. Fourth, there is a challenge for packmaster, with Alcide's father competing against someone who turns out to be a cheater. The winner becomes packmaster. And the loser? Well, losing carries a high price here. Fifth, two detectives are investigating the death of Alcide's old girlfriend (whom Sookie happened to kill with a shotgun as the other woman tried to shoot her).Sookie is an attractive and sympathetic character. The vampires and other supernatural creatures are portrayed in a manner that is oddly effective, although certainly not realistic. The plots of these books tend to be somewhat incredible, with many different strands playing out. But the ensemble of characters works pretty well together and the books are quick reads.

In this companion to their popular TV series, they feature traditional and new-wave Latin and Spanish cuisine, with an emphasis on spicy, robust, casual dishes, ideal for festive entertaining. The 150 recipes include tamales, of course, along with other, inspired appetizers; soups, salads, and brunch dishes; main courses such as Brazilian Marinated Steaks with Chile Lime Sauce and side dishes; imaginative desserts; and spirited cocktails. The book is peppered with useful cooking tips, information on ingredients, and food anecdotes, and the style is personal and approachable. (The small photos from the Food Network set are more about the chefs than their food.) Strongly recommended.?Susan Lantzius, formerly with San Domenico Restaurant, New YorkCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

`too hot tamales' and `Mesa Mexicana' are the two books currently available from the chef / teaching / restauranteur team known as the `too hot tamales' of early Food Network fame, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. They recently went up against Bobby Flay on `Iron Chef America'. Not that it really matters, but I don't remember who won or what the secret ingredient was. What is important is that it was easily one of the most entertaining and memorable `Iron Chef America' episodes, comparable to the very first one featuring Chicago Mexican cuisine expert Rick Bayless and the competition featuring Oriental fusion master, Ming Tsai of `Blue Ginger'. What I do remember is the imprint of the iron on the back of Susan Feniger's blouse and the inventive recipe they did for Scotch eggs. The first impression of both of these books is not inspiring. The layout is ordinary, leaning toward the garish. The photographs are in a grainy black and white and too small to easily make sense of what is happening, not to mention the fact that most are missing captions. In `too hot tamales', it is even difficult to tell which of these two delightful ladies is Mary Sue and which is Susan, from the lack of clear identification on the photographs. The flyleaf of `Mesa Mexicana' clears this up. Mary Sue is the taller with blond hair and Susan is the shorter with dark hair. They also neglect to give a good picture of co-author, Helene Siegel, whose voice seems to be strong in the prefaces and introductions.Based on the strong `Iron Chef America' appearance, I decided to check out the books from this duo, even though their Food Network show was before my time. I figured two gals with this much energy and a strong showing against the indomitable Bobby must have something to say. At the outset, the book `too hot tamales' did not impress, until I got to the chapters on soups. At this point, the authors' observations seemed to come alive. This was not nearly as strong as what I saw in Deborah Madison's recent book on soups, but the comparison showed that Mary Sue and Susan clearly had something important to say. That is not to say that `too hot tamales' is the better book. `Mesa Mexicana' is actually the better of the two for anyone who is not familiar with Mexican cooking. Having determined that these books have something to say, the next big question is why get these books instead one from the heavy hitters of Mexican cuisine, Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy. For starters, both Bayless and Kennedy's best books are more strongly oriented toward teaching Mexican cooking, either by technique or by region. Milliken and Feniger's books are more for fun, without straying too far from strong roots in genuine Mexican cooking technique. If all you want are some good, snappy recipes without being tied to the grill (as you are with many of Bobby Flay's recipes), Milliken and Feniger may be your best choice. They are certainly your best choice if you are attracted to entertaining with a Mexican theme. I had an epiphany of insight when I realized that a rather large number of pages in both books, as well as many pages in many other cookbooks are dedicated to `starters', `finger food', `appetizers', `hors `d'ourves', `antipasto' and what have your. But if you live in a typical family, how much time do you really spend making `party food' in comparison to daily breakfasts, lunches, and suppers. Why don't cookbooks dedicate 20% of their books to breakfast and 35% of their books to brown bag food rather than giving so much room to entertaining food, which the average cook may make once a month, if they are inclined to entertain with food in the first place. All this means is that these books are much more valuable to you if you do entertain often. This is especially true because both books are very reasonably priced, appropriate to their uninspired art work. It is also true because of the rather odd organization of the recipes. In both books, some chapters are organized by function or meal, some by style of cooking, and some by principle ingredient. This means neither book is especially good if you want to find a book to fit a particular function or to use a particular ingredient. The fact that both books are relatively short confirms that neither book may be very useful if you have room for only a very small cookbook collection. But if you can afford the money and space for a large cookbook collection, you will probably already have one or more volumes from Kennedy and Bayless, so why load yourself up with our spicy gals? For most people, the answer is simply that they are great fun to read and their recipes get right to the point. If you are a foodie, you don't need another tutorial on technique. If you are a casual cook who entertains, you can go straight to the largely very concise recipes and get on with it. So, both books are easily worth the room they take up on your shelves. As an aside, it is really interesting to see our gals' comments on the cooking talents of the Mexicans, which is very similar to Tony Bourdain's comments in `A Cook's Tour', where he states that almost all his line chefs at `Les Halle' are Mexican with practically no formal training, yet they are as capable as most French trained cooks. If you really like cookbooks or you really like Mexican food, I recommend both of these books.

Everyone can cook authentic Mexican / Southwestern cuisine. If you want to learn how to make the moles (sauces) this does it.

Easy to follow instructions and a good variety of different styles. Only thing I wish is that they had some recipes that were not so dependent on hot peppers.

Didn't have the cover, but for a penny the book was in great condition.

as described fast shipping

I've eaten at the Border Grill every time I go to Vegas. I love being able to replicate the flavors without too much work on my part. Well-written and tasty recipes!
