Lost Gardens of England: From the Archives of Country Life

From Booklist

Once upon a time, in a faraway land called England, there lived a race of people who created some of the most opulent and mannered gardens the world has ever seen. Elegant ladies in flowing gowns cast loving looks on their reflections in tranquil, tree-lined pools. Massive topiaries shaped like Egyptian mosques dotted the landscape, and labyrinthine parterres lured visitors with their elaborate mazes. Sadly, the ravages of war and of time itself took their toll on these fabled pleasure lands, destroying their beauty and erasing them from the face of the earth. Our fairy tale has a happy ending, however, thanks to Bradley-Hole and the archives of Country Life magazine. In this lavishly produced monograph, the author captures 46 of these patrician gardens at the height of their aristocratic grandeur in magnificent duotone photographs that hauntingly reveal their elusive, ephemeral glory. Captivating text provides the background on each estate, making this an invaluable resource for gardeners, architects, and historians alike. Carol HaggasCopyright © American Library Association. Classic garden photography in black and white, embellishing the text. Text describes a brief history of the house, its setting in the landscape, how the garden works with the landscape and the gardening style. The story of how the garden lost its brilliance and fell into demise is outlined, along with current use and forward planning. This is a good book to absorb on the quiet without friends and family interruptions. Have the internet handy so that you can check out the current state of these lovely country houses and gardens as you read.

"Lost Gardens of England" is one of the better books published about the English garden style. As one who has an extensive collection about the subject, this is the one I keep returning to again and again.Yes, the photographs are all black and white (this is the pre-war period, after all), but I believe this actually adds to the haunting, mists-of-time quality of the book. The photographs and excellent narrative descriptions of the fates of these grand gardens remind us of the ultimate fragility and temporary nature of our horticultural efforts, and by extension, of all human efforts. Some of the gardens look so completely timeless, particularly those done in a classical style with Roman sculptures, that they and the great houses they accompany seem as if they had been there as long as Roman ruins have existed, and would continue undisturbed for millennia. But the designers were merely excellent pretenders, as most gardens did not exist for more than two or three decades -- only during the lifetimes of the owners. Some were sold to developers and immediately destroyed, some were passed on to new owners who deliberately simplified them, and some merely suffered from neglect: nature has its own idea of what trees and bushes should look like (usually uncontrolled growth, although Dutch Elm disease and other blights took their toll)."Lost Gardens" shows gardens during the golden period of British gardening, a period curtailed by war, social changes and the destructive British tax system. Gardening there was forever changed, good changes in many respects, but one can mourn the passing of an era, and this book details just what was lost.

Being such a splendid book, my only want is that it should be in colours. The book captures the spirit of each garden with pictures and words and it feels like reading a fairy tale.It also captures an era lost to us now, of grand houses and parties, ladies in white dresses and men smoking cigars and the act of creating exactly the garden fantasy you want whatever the cost. Some are wild, some are amazing, some ar just beautiful but all very interesting and nostalgic to look upon.

The book brings forward the historical position of Christianity in Just Wars. It adds clarity to the requirement of a Christian to evaluate their sovereign state's political position as to whether a war is just or unjust. It then makes clear that a just war is to be supported as a requirement of being a Christian! The book makes its arguments based on scripture and does not avoid the preference of Christianity to support peace -- it just recognizes that peace and Christian honesty require that a Christian fight to oppose oppression, subjugation, and degradation of the weak, the poor, and the down-trodden. The book adds a valuable perspective to the issues of war, peace, sacrifice, and duty. It clarifies the duty of the Christian citizenry. I commend it to every service person, every service person's family, and to every Christian that has the courage to broaden their understanding and faith.

Of historical and practical interest.

Awesome book and awesome shipper!!

This scholarly work provides ample evidence that a Just War is not the "lesser of two evils" but is rather a positive good. Using the Bible and reams and reams of references to the Church Fathers, Orthodox prelates, and Protestant reformers, the authors painstakingly back up their premise that war can be virtuous. The end of the book includes analyses of the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. This worthwhile reading bogs down a bit in the middle where the authors continue to list their extensive references. The writing in this area speaks more of a scholarly effort than of popular fare, but once I was through this area, I was pleased to have made the effort. For those interested in learning about the historical, moral view of war, and seeing how recent developments in pacifistic thought have modified Just War Theory, I highly recommend this book.

The preeminence of pacifism within the Church as the proper reaction to military conflict is so established within contemporary Christianity that it is sometimes forgotten that this has not been the historic Christian position. Orthodox theologians Alexander F. C. Webster and Darrell Cole remind us of this fact in The Virtue of War, an important apologia for the Christian tradition of the just war.Webster and Cole begin with the turmoil democracies - centered primarily in nations with a Christian tradition - face with the onslaught of Islamic terrorism as in the 9/11 murder of innocent civilians. The authors immediately make an important distinction between the Christian tradition of justifiable war in order to defend the people of God from unprovoked aggression and the Islamic ideal of jihad that defends the idea of launching attacks upon non-Muslim neighbors for the purpose of extending Muslim controlled areas. After noting the division caused in the Church by the influence of modern liberal thinking on war, the authors then turn to a thorough examination of the Orthodox view of war and its justification in Holy Scripture, Church Fathers, Church Canons, Saints, Liturgies, and more modern Orthodox theologians. The breadth of this powerful tradition - often ignored in contemporary commentary - puts to rest any argument that the Eastern Church has largely been pacifist. Warfare is not only under certain circumstances justifiable, but is itself virtuous and not merely a "lesser of two evils." In this tradition, the Christian warrior protecting the people of God is seen as a noble and necessary calling to be respected within the Church.Webster and Cole then turn to the Western Church and see a similar position developed and taking hold within both the Catholic and Protestant traditions. The most renowned figures in both Catholicism (St. Ambrose, St. Augustine of Hippo, St Thomas Aquinas) and Protestantism (Martin Luther, John Calvin) all supported the idea of the just war although their presentations and arguments may have varied in approach. The authors also consider the writings of the Dutch Calvinist Hugo Grotius who represents the apex of the Protestant just war tradition.Turning then to the opponents of the just war tradition, the authors demonstrate both their failure to consider the whole counsel of God and their neglect of the witness of two millennia of the Church and its Great Tradition. The weaknesses of the modern approach are surveyed and its inability to contend with aggressive evil noted. Now that the Church is face-to-face with an aggressor who seeks our destruction, it is imperative that we reclaim the Christian concept of just war and not be cowed into believing that we are forbidden to defend ourselves. With The Virtue of War, Professors Webster and Cole have done the Church a great service in reminding us of the great heritage of the Christian warrior. If only the Church will listen...

This is an absolutely amazing book for the Christian. I wouldn't recommend it for the nonChristian, because, as a theological work, it takes the Bible as axiomatic. However, if you are a Christian that believes the Bible is the inspired Word of God, then there is really no getting around the conclusions of this book, especially if you are Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, or Calvinist. For the evangelical, you will find enough Scripture references to be convinced amidst the appeals to tradition and logic. Complex at times, it is always insightful.

While some of Father Alexander's assertions and arguments, such as his assertion that the current war in Iraq has not caused any humanitarian crises, sound laughable (or lamentable, as the case may be) today (the book was published in 2004), his observations about the modern world and just war doctrine's place there in make for a very interesting read. Worthwhile, if outdated and incomplete, read, for anybody looking for a treatment of just war from within an Orthodox perspective.

I just had to comment because of the last rude comment. Everyone is entitled to their opinion so here is mine. The Virtue of War is a fabulous piece of writing that will open up your mind to new thoughts about something that has plagued generation after generation. I commend the writers on a fine piece of work and feel sorry for others who obviously missed the point when reading this book.Dr. Haty Kahn Ph.D. Theology Columbia University

Review

“Matt Haig’s latest book, How To Stop Time, is marvelous in every sense of the word. Clever, funny, poignant, and written with Haig’s trademark blend of crystalline prose and deft storytelling, this is a book that stirs the heart and mind in equal measure. A hugely enjoyable read.” —Deborah Harkness, author of The All Souls Trilogy"Inventive and heartfelt and unusual. . . . [How To Stop Time] made for a great summer read." —Kristin Hannah, New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale"Compelling and full of life's big questions, How To Stop Time is a book you will not be able to put down." —Graeme Simsion, author of The Rosie Project "Matt Haig has an empathy for the human condition, the light and the dark of it, and he uses the full palette to build his excellent stories." —Neil Gaiman, author of American Gods"Haig remains a keen-eyed observer of contemporary life. . . his dialogue has snap and charm." —The New York Times"A wry, intriguing meditation on time and an eternal human challenge: how to relinquish the past and live fully in the present.” —People"[How To Stop Time] is fantastic" —Brad Thor, New York Times bestselling author of Spy Master“A quirky romcom dusted with philosophical observations….A delightfully witty…poignant novel.” —The Washington Post"Time is all about the moments, not the space between them. Haig has done a fine job of capturing a few beautiful ones like butterflies in a jar — instants of love or rage or heartbreak. And one of them is even the night that Tom Hazard spent drinking ale with Shakespeare." —NPR“The central character of the poignant new novel How to Stop Time is 41-year-old Tom Hazard, a man who has been alive for centuries, and who moves every eight years in order to avoid detection. As he settles into a new life in London, he realizes that the one thing that would derail his (very long) life—falling in love—might just be worth it.” —Southern Living"A time traveling love story… [and] a coming-of-age tale that continues for centuries. It’s The Time Traveler’s Wife meets The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, yet manages to be even more unique.” —HelloGiggles"How to Stop Time is a clever, beautifully crafted novel about love, history, and the tangled mess that comes with trying to live a human life of any length." —Bustle"Matt Haig uses words like a tin-opener. We are the tin." —Jeanette Winterson, author of Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?“Haig has been gifted with a rare ability, which is to make the far-fetched – and even ridiculous – seem believable. His books tickle your mind and tug on your heart, and their pages slip by with beguiling ease. . . How to Stop Time will provoke wonder and delight.”  —The Guardian"But How to Stop Time is also a considered, heartfelt document, as you might expect from an author who wrote an internationally bestselling memoir of depression, Reasons to Stay Alive. It unfolds its secrets carefully: an action-packed but often sad story for slow, long-term thinkers.  Wrapped inside this sci-fi school sitcom premise is a poetic manifesto of what really matters in the long run. One that Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg would do well to read." —Mashable“The lively creativity of Matt Haig continues to delight and enchant readers. In How to Stop Time, he offers a well-drawn cast of vivid characters embroiled in an inventive, fast-paced story that successfully blends fantasy, romance, comedy and adventure.”—Shelf Awareness"Matt Haig is astounding." —Stephen Fry"Inventive, exciting, moving and bursting with insight about history, time and what it is to be human." —Kate Williams, author of Becoming Queen Victoria"I loved How to Stop Time, it’s a beautiful and necessary book. I feel very lucky to have read it. It is magical, intriguing, and at times, very sad. A triumph." —Marian Keyes, author of The Woman Who Stole My Life"I am in concert with Haig’s fans as I read the book, turning pages for the story but also stopping to underline passages. I want to remember the lines. I want to read out loud to someone. Nothing like a love that lasts 400 years." —Publisher's Weekly“How to Stop Time is a bittersweet story about the meaning of life.”—Kirkus"An addictive, time-travelling tale which unfolds at a cracking pace" —The Bookseller, Book of the Month"An engaging story framed by a brooding meditation on time and meaning." —The Austin American-Statesman"Full of Haig’s trademark humour and humanity, this is a wonderfully entertaining ride through centuries of adventure. Gloriously heart-warming." —Sunday Mirror"A story you’ve been longing to read . . . Haig’s proficiency in writing for children has lent a gentleness that cuts to the very heart of this work and its readers." —Evening Standard, "The Best Books to Read This Summer""How to Stop Time is a worthy addition to the time-travel canon, hugely entertaining, quietly funny and, at its best moments, contemplative and brooding." —John Boyne, Irish Times

4.5 starsHow to Stop Time is a thought-provoking read. Matt Haig envisions a world where a small group of individuals age at a much slower pace than the average human. While the main character, Tom Hazard, looks 41, he is actually centuries old. To avoid being institutionalized or treated as a medical research subject, Tom has moved around his entire life staying nowhere more than 8-10 years. When the book opens, Tom has decided to return to London and teach history at a local low-income high school. He is tired of constantly being on the move and wants to have an ordinary life. As his quest for a normal life unfolds, we are taken back and forth in time to learn about the many places and people Tom has experienced over his long and storied life.I loved the history aspects of the story. In his lengthy life, Tom met Shakespeare, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Captain Cook and many others, and their encounters were so much fun to read about. Haig focuses on relationships and their importance in people’s lives. He also observes that humans are bound to repeat the mistakes of the past, a sentiment that addresses what the United States is experiencing right now. I don’t generally quote books in my reviews, but I felt that the following statement completely encapsulates what we are going through right now: “The lesson is that ignorance and superstition are things that can rise up, inside almost anyone, at any moment. And what starts as a doubt in a mind can swiftly become an act in the world.” His recognition that humans are bound to repeat the mistakes of the past is a sobering and timely statement.I enjoyed How to Stop Time. Occasionally, I was ready for it to move along a little faster but overall it was a very entertaining read.

This was a fairly easy read for me, and one that I absolutely devoured in a day. And it's kind-of funny, I told my son while I was reading it that I saw this in my head as a movie. Rarely do I picture things being acted out when I'm reading them. I don't normally see characters or places as I'm going along. But with this book, I could SEE everything so clearly. I could perfectly visualize Tom walking down a street in London, and seeing the present day chip shops etc but also seeing what it was like in the past bleeding through and causing him to lose his breath. Being taken aback by realizing he's standing in front of the spot that was once his home, and is now a pet shop.In the beginning of the book, Tom talks about how he's not like a vampire stuck perpetually in his youth. He is aging. He will die. He CAN die. He's not immortal. But the story is reminiscent, at least to me, of some of the better vampire fiction I've read in the past. Even more so, it reminded me of the television show New Amsterdam starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (of Game of Thrones fame), which only aired for 8 episodes but I LOVED. The whole idea of living for an extremely long amount of time, watching people come and go, places evolve, loves lost and the whole gamut of issues that would arise if you had lived for over 400 years...and knew you were going to live for about 900...are fascinating and this book merely touches on them, and with a flourish that is at times almost poetic.I think my favorite sections of the book involved the people in the past that Tom interacted with, and then how he tried to weave some of his knowledge into the school lessons he was teaching. I'm a giant Shakespeare nerd, so the section in which he works for Shakespeare was wonderful. Was it historically accurate? I haven't the foggiest, and don't even care a whole lot...it was just entertaining to me! And having drinks with Fitzgerald?!? So lovely, and in my head Fitz was totally Hiddles. (If you haven't watched Midnight in Paris, you need to!!)Yes, there is a bit of a love story...but it wasn't sappy or overwhelmingly emotional. I feel like the real love story here involved Tom and Life in general. The book really was all about Tom figuring out how he wanted to live all of these years that he's been given. Did he want to just go through the paces and saunter along in a fog? Or did he want to open himself up to new and exciting possibilities, and put himself out there again?A quick and enjoyable book. Science-Fiction with some historical aspects. I enjoyed the author's writing style, which has an almost poetic flourish. I definitely recommend it!

I was constantly frustrated reading this book. It was written well and the premise of the book is interesting-- it takes the idea of immortality and de-mystifies it. However, the main character is extraordinarily flat and the most interesting characters get very little page time (e.g. Marion, Mary Peters). Regarding structure, each chapter alternates between present day and past and the past chapters are so long and the present day ones so short that no concept or character ever gets well developed. I wanted to like this book so much, but I had to force myself to finish it because it was so dull.
