A third of the way into this book and loving it. As a Dayton native many of the subjects are familiar to me, but its been delightful to learn the greater meaning behind the neighborhoods, the companies and the people of the city’s past as well as the social implications surrounding them. Likewise, the author’s light, yet rich writing style is ideal for telling these rewarding stories.
Knowing means a lot more than recalling. People who know anything about Dayton are probably more familiar with the "Town of 1000 Factories" or the "Original Silicon Valley," a town known for patents and manufacturing in the early 20th century.Andrew introduces us to the Dayton that existed then, that you can't see with your own eyes now. Whether taken by urban renewal, or white flight turned to blight, he details buildings and their cultural significance to a booming town that doubled in size from the 1910s to 1950.

This book taught me so much about the history of Dayton. I am very amazed at how much culture this city has how much it has changed. I have been living here since 2009 and I can already feel the difference between then and now and hopes of Dayton becoming a city that it once was. Andrew does a great job of going through the history of different parts of towns and provides a vivid image of what a particular space or building was compared to present day.
Great book for anyone enamored by Dayton’s past but hopeful for its future. I enjoyed learning new history about the many places I’ve visited in town!
