The Elements Book: A Visual Encyclopedia of the Periodic Table, by DK

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–7—An array of glittering crystals, lambent chunks of ore, and artistically posed lab samples that were all definitely ready for their close-ups are paired with equally vivid photos of manufactured products, scientific instruments, works of art, prominent scientists, and large-scale natural features to give this tour of the periodic table a strongly visual character. Arranged not by atomic number but (more logically) in groups, the 118 entries each contain examples of an element's various forms and common uses, diagrams of atomic structures, and, occasionally, a side profile of the element's discoverer or namesake. The narrative text is often rather squeezed into a ribbon along the lower margins, offering pithy explanatory comments on the pictures, which are accompanied by clearly visible labels and captions. Jackson occasionally makes simplistic claims, such as assertions that there are only three states of matter (more than a dozen have been demonstrated or theorized) and that Robert Boyle was the first to conduct chemistry experiments. Still, his information is precise, concise, and current enough to include the recently assigned permanent names for elements 113, 115, 117, and 118. VERDICT Not an essential replacement for older surveys such as Dan Green's The Elements or Albert Stwertka's Guide to the Elements, but for upper elementary and middle school students, this is a dazzling and up-to-date alternative.—John Peters, Children's Literature Consultant, New York

In the classic DK manner, this book takes a subject that could be unbelievably tedious and makes it fun with the spectacular use of images. And don't believe the "age range" - this book is good for all ages. Each of the 118 recognized elements is covered in from 1/2 to 2 pages, with illustrations of the forms it exists in and then plentiful images of the uses each element has been used for. There are many elements, and not just the newer ones, that are largely unknown to the average person, and many are used in ways that we do not realize. One thing that might bother people is that the elements are not listed alphabetically or by atomic number; instead they are arranged in groups as they appear in the periodic table. But if you need to look up a particular element, you have both the table of contents and a useful index at your disposal.I think that every well-informed household should have a book about the elements, and I think that for the layman, this book is the best available for that purpose!

My four-year-old grandson loves it, even though he can't read yet! HIs dad reads it to him at night and he is mesmerized by the gorgeous illustrations and strange-sounding names. I, too, fell under its spell and bought a copy for myself. It has rekindled my interest in science, which has lain dormant since high school chemistry many moons ago. Another winner from Dorling Kindersley and Smithsonian.

I purchased this book as a gift for my 6 year-old who graduated from Kindergarten this year. I know it is a little old for him, but it looked interesting to me as well, so I figured it was worth a try. At the very least, I would have a cool book for my own library or a book that might be referenced in future school or study projects. My son took to it immediately. It is beautifully illustrated and organized. It has enough information to be interesting to an adult, like myself, plus fun little facts that appeal to my budding earth scientist. When he is looking at this book, all I hear is: ".Hey mama, did you know that...." I love it when my kids get excited by books.

My 3rd grader became hooked on the elements from going through his principles college textbooks. This one is fantastic for him. It gives real world examples with pictures for their uses without "dumbing it down" too much. His favorite birthday gift this year.

This was a Christmas gift and it was perfect. My great nephew loved it. He has been studying the elements and this was very well written. I was really impressed with this book, the content, pictures, history behind each element. I would recommend this book for all ages.

We bought this for my son for his 7th birthday and it was a an absolute hit. He is fascinated with atoms, molecules and chemistry and not only did I love the mix of knowledge and just practical pictures and uses/applications/history etc in this book, but he did too. He has read this through more than once in two months and has gone on to read every chemistry book he can find at the library. He still goes back to this as his source of the basics.

Not much information...the VAST majority of the book is just pictures and brief descriptions of random things the element is in. Not enough emphasis on the relationship within a group.

Bought this book for our homeschool study on the elements. We are ALL enjoying it!! Each element has a quick overview and then there are pictures and stories to make certain facts stick. My 6 year old loves the practical application and fun stories about machinery
