Review
“This book is appropriate for all those interested in healthcare information systems. It is specifically written for physicians, as a quick overview of the legal and political landscape of health informatics systems as implemented in the US. Non-US readers might find the book interesting as a means of comparing the developments in this country with the developments in other parts of the world.†(Carla Sánchez Aguilar, Computing Reviews, computingreviews.com, June, 2016)“Braunstein (health informatics, School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Tech) presents an excellent, wide-ranging review of such systems. … This volume will be useful for students of informatics generally as well as for those in the medical field. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals.†(R. A. Brugna, Choice, Vol. 53 (6), February, 2016)

Advance Praise for Practitioner’s Guide to Health Informatics:"Dr. Braunstein has managed to take what is traditionally a dense and occasionally untranslatable topic and to frame it in an informal, conversational, and accessible style. Well done! The book begins with a carefully constructed and well referenced discussion about the healthcare system and the current regulatory climate developed to help transform it. The section on HIE is one of the most comprehensive I have seen. Dr. Braunstein smartly goes into detail about methods to achieve interoperability before delving into standards. He summarizes each chapter, and builds upon what has been learned from previous chapters, to make sure the reader is able to appreciate how these chapters are connected. Although many of these chapters contain highly technical descriptions, the text smartly allows users to circumvent these sections without a loss of flow or a need to refer back to the technical areas. The book is replete with pictures, references and quotations that will allow any reader to delve more deeply into virtually every chapter. This book will be a terrific introduction to the field of clinical IT and clinical informatics, and is a welcomed addition to the materials we have as instructors in this field."- Kevin B. Johnson, MD, MS is a Professor and Chair of Biomedical Informatics, Vanderbilt University Medical Center"Dr. Braunstein has done a wonderful job of exploring a number of key trends in technology in the context of the transformations that are occurring in our health care system, and highlighting how these trends are likely to both play out and influence the evolution of current and future health IT systems. This book is accessible to non-technical as well as technical readers, and is a valuable read for any health care practitioner and health care executive, and for those individuals contemplating research and development or entrepreneurial opportunities in this domain."- Robert A. Greenes, MD, PhD, Ira A. Fulton Chair and Professor, Professor Biomedical Informatics, Arizona State University"This insightful book is a perfect primer for technologists entering the health tech field."- Deborah Estrin, PhD, Professor of Computer Science, Cornell Tech, Professor of Public Health at Weill Cornell Medical College "Producing sharable digital data from care delivery and actually sharing it is arguably the single most important contribution health informatics can make to better healthcare in our country," is the way Dr. Braunstein starts this eminently practical yet very detailed look at what our country needs from the field of medical informatics. He has produced a minor masterpiece of analysis and explanation about the use of computers in medicine and health care delivery, one that is as useful for the informed lay person as it is for any clinical professional needing a brief overview of the field. This book should be read by everyone."- David C. Kibbe, M.D., M.B.A. Director, Center for Health Information Technology, American Academy of Family Physicians, President and CEO, Co-founder DirectTrust.org

My 2 cents in the review book:I must say that Dr. Braunstein's Practitioner's Guide to Health Informatics (The newer but less comprehensive book than the text) is absolutely the best investment I have made so far.I am a physician from New Delhi, India and since past 5 years (Since my exposure at HiMSS conferences/ American Hospital Association/ American Telemedicine Association meets) I was perplexed by HIT and I always wanted to be a Meaningful Use Vanguard myself. India is still 30 years behind from US in E.M.R adoption, so Health Informatics is almost non existent in India. National e Health Authority (a.k.a. ONC of India will surface not before 2017 it's still at a concept note phase)After reading Dr Braunstein's MOOC on Udacity now the MOOC on FHIR plus having Dr Braunstein's latest book in my arsenal, I am now on my way to actually start looking into Meaningful Use Stage 1 adoption and becoming an "eligible professional"ELIGIBLE NOT FOR INCENTIVE PAYMENTS BUT TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT FABLED LEARNING HEALTH SYSTEM"All this while sitting in India. In my view there are many gold standard texts like Dr Shortliffes, Hoyt and also the leadership book Life as a Healthcare CIO by Dr John D Halamka which each in its own right are Bible of Health Informatics, I however would start my journey as a clinical informaticist with Dr. Braunstein's Mooc, Followed by his Notes --> Practitioners' Guide to health Informatics (Braunstein)--> Life as a Healthcare CIO(Halamka)-->Contemporary HEalth Informatics (Braunstein)--> Introduction to Biomedical and Public Health Informatics(Shortlliffe)--> Coreia textbook---> HiMSS e Learning.Dr Braunstein's MOOC + Notes + Book combination provides the Working Rubric and the essential framework which most others either miss or fail to advertise.I think this book is the first major comprehensive book+workbook geared towards COMBATING PHYSICIAN's BARRIER TO ADOPTION of HEALTH IT 5Dr. Mayank Agarwal · a month ago · EditedAgain, rather than taking multitude of webinars at HiMSS Sponsored by Vendors and getting myself souped in Information overload, I will stick to the technologies mentioned by Dr M B and the EHRs associated with them and probably select my Webinars based upon sustainable technologies like FHIR rather than accumulating HiMSS Certification points. One can get CPHIMS certification points by login onto webinar and leave out for a dinner and return to claim the CPHIMS continuous Education Points.Nevertheless HiMSS is inevitable and my professional society of Choice after American Medical Informatics Association But I priorotize accordingly and they keep on changing. One thing that will not change will be the Top Position that Dr. Mark Braunstein's MOOC and BOOK will get in user ratings ( at least in years to come)
The only book deserving of this title. Systematic coverage of electronic medical records, including their implementation and usage. Many concrete practical examples from real systems and real usage. Also includes examples of predictive modeling and data analytics thus far possible. Recommended as textbook for undergraduate courses and supplement for graduate courses, in addition to reference for professionals.
As one who is actively engaged in this field, I find Dr. Braunstein's book to be the most relevant and succinct overview available. I recommend it to students, practitioners, policy makers, and researchers. It's a must have for those who follow this field.
This Guide is a very helpful addition to entry level users and as you note near the end, it should help keep those just diving into these waters from getting discouraged that better days won’t be forthcoming. Don Detmer
It's a bit dry but it gets down to the bare bones of health informatics. It's what you need when you just need an introduction.
