There's one main thing you need to know about this: it's TINY. I feel like the picture misrepresents the item. This thing is about as tall as an iPhone 6+ standing up and about as wide as the same phone on it's side. Make absolutely certain you see the product dimensions which I didn't: Product Dimensions: 5.2 x 2 x 6.2 inches. My second gripe is that, while this is marketed as a "phonics box," the books inside are more like for a pre-schooler. A kindergartner or 1st grader would laugh at the simplicity of these "stories" which usually consist of 3-4 words per page.You may look at this like I did and say "8 bucks for this many books? Wow!" But the reality is you're getting glorified Happy Meal toys in a single, tiny cardboard box.
My six-year-old daughter eats, sleeps and breathes "My Little Pony", and also enjoys reading the similarly-sized, phonics-based Bob books, so I figured this product was a sure win. Wrong!First of all, it really doesn't rely on phonics at all, as other reviewers have noted. The "short a" book we picked up first contains a handful of words with the short a in them and then a whole bunch of other, much more complicated sounds and words that are way above a beginning phonics reading level.Secondly, my daughter was familiar with the story, but it was "dumbed down" for the book (and remarkably, not in a way that made it phonetically easier to read). She was completely disgusted, and kept correcting it ("THAT'S not what Pinkie Pie said!" etc.). After the first book, she didn't want to even try another one.So, it didn't win with me in the phonics department and it didn't win with her in the pony department. I didn't know there was a way a My Little Pony product could go wrong with my pony-obsessed daughter, but the makers of the Pony Phonics Box found one.
As others have pointed out, this is a cheap tie-in product attempting to make My Little Pony educational. Even my pony-mad daughters were not impressed complaining the books were 'too short'.The box has 12 mini books each about 10 pages that introduce a vowel sound and some sight words. The stories are sparse to non-existent and just reuse art from the cartoon, no money was spent creating original art that might fit the story better. The text is very simple obviously written to introduce the words. Unfortunately there's not much style, for example there's no use of rhyme or rhythm despite the fact the words share a vowel sound.There s a chance, a small chance, that our girls' loyalty to My Little Pony will make them pick up these books on their own and practice their reading skills but I think there are better products out there for young readers.
This entire package could have been made MUCH better.My daughter, a lover of My Little Pony, was completely bored with these books in about a week. Even the decodable phonics words weren't enough inspiration to keep her reading when confronted with far too many words she wasn't ready for, and the names! The pictures were a bit too close to sight-word clues, as well, which meant she didn't have to try to know what was going on. For a 'phonics' package, these books relied too much on the 'sight words' clues (guessing at story instead of READING).The books are tiny- more like what your kids bring home as freebies from public school than something you paid money for.Not sorry I bought them for her, but definitely not what they advertise themselves to be.
When I bought these, as a gift, I knew exactly what I was looking for, I had a hand me down version for my kids. So here are my thoughtsThey ARE exactly what I was looking for EXCEPT for the fact that the box they are kept in is a flimsy-ish cardboard box... knowing how some young kids can be... we'll say 'excited' I am worried the box won't last long and the books will get lost around the house because they are so small. But on the other hand it's a gift and therefore maybe a "not my house, not my problem" kinda thing...? I just wish maybe they came in a little bit of a more permanent 'keep 'em in' box...otherwise, Yay!
I understand that these books are meant to be used as phonics lessons, but I also feel it's possible to write simple stories that don't feel like random phrases slapped together. The images are poor quality: quite small pictures of the characters even relative to the already-small pages. In some instances, they almost look pixelated as if they were reproduced from photos of the TV show stills. This was a regrettable purchase.
I'm not an expert on phonics books, so I can't rate this book in that way. But each book has an emphasis on a particular vowel sound, so I think is a great way to introduce my daughter to specific sounds. The books seem to be a great start for learning how words sound. Don't expect this one purchase to teach your child everything about reading. That is just too silly to expect. But I think my daughter, who is new to reading, has learned a very important concept from this book: How the vowels sound when they appear in words. To me, it seems easier for children to learn consonants, so I'm glad to have a set that teaches about vowels.
I had bought this as a prize gift for my daughter when she did her workbook for the week. She just chose it and to our surprise, one of the books had a stain inside of it with something that consisted of deodorant. AND what was supposed to be 12 different books turned out to be 2 of the same books... to late to return it so stuck with it. Very dissatisfied
