Excellent biography of Henry Flagler. The book contains great detail about Flagler's impact on St Augustine and Florida's east coast, including the building of his great hotels and the Florida East Coast Railroad. The author provides vivid descriptions of the people who populated Flagler's world. There's a lot of detail here but it is never tedious. The one area of Flagler's legacy that is more or less glossed over (presumably because it has little to do with Mr. Flagler's St. Augustine) is the extension of the railway to Key West. It's covered but not in great detail. For that reason, I would highly recommend that this book be read in conjunction with "Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean" by Les Standiford.
It would be impossible for me to praise this book adequately. Dr. Graham has done a masterful job researching Henry Flagler's life and accomplishments in turning St. Augustine, Florida, from a quaint, sleepy town into a tourist Mecca for the rich and powerful in the late nineteenth century. The reader gets the pleasure of not only exploring Flagler's business side, including his partnership with Rockefeller in creating the Standard Oil Company, but in also witnessing the reclusive, private side of one of the richest men of his time. Dr. Graham also exposes the truth behind Flagler's three wives, and the heartache that frequently accompanied his relationships and family. As far as I'm concerned, this book should be considered required reading for anyone taking a course in Florida history, as Henry Flagler's influence on St. Augustine and the entire state, simply cannot be overstated. Dr. Graham's eloquent portrayal of a man who was a true visionary will live long into the future.
This is a well written work and history of Saint Augustine, and will be well received by anyone interested in Mr. Flagler and his Florida East Coast railway and Hotel endeavors. The history is very interesting, and it drove me to take some time this month to visit Anistasia Isl and Saint Augustine...to get some perspective on the city, and to see in person some of his work. Fascinating stuff! This is a link to some photos we took in Saint Augustine this week: https://plus.google.com/photos/+RobertPayette/albums/6051213789220651761
Excellent Service from Amazon and seller of the book...Beautiful condition. The book was well written and informative as to the development of St Augustine. However I was more interested in Mr Flagler rather than the Guests at the Ponce De Leon. But this was my fault in my expectations. That said, one criticism I can't overlook, given the extensive coverage of thedevelopment of the city was the absence of mapS ( there is one at the very beginning of the book). How nice it would have been had the authorfollowed the property changes at each year grouping at the beginning of each chapter. In short, More Flagler, more maps, less Hotel registry.
Henry Flagler is too often forgotten but was a truly remarkable visionary just when our young nation needed him. A bit tedious due to the private nature of Henry Flagler, relying on old newspapers for much research, this still offers a grand view of a generation of American doers in business and builders of our national pride. Florida and Flagler are one in many ways.
Fascinating, Lot's of information and a good behind the scenes look, at how a very wealthy individual, was able to create and change the course, of not only a city, but a whole state.
This is a fascinating book about how Henry Flagler turned the oldest city in the United States into a glittering tourist destination. Dr. Graham's research is impressive and the book is hard to put down.
Well researched, comprehensive, and easy to follow and understand. It is great to know about the history of St. Augustine and the tremendous impact that Henry Flagler had on the survival and growth of this little great city!
