About the Author
WILLIAM W. FITZHUGH is the director of the Arctic Studies Center and curator in the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Fitzhugh has conducted archaeology from Maine to Greenland and is currently excavating Basque and Inuit sites in Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. WILFRED E. RICHARD is a geographer with a concentration in environmental studies, photographer, and Registered Maine Guide. Richard is a research collaborator with the Smithsonian’s Arctic Studies Center, a research fellow at the Uummannaq Polar Institute in Greenland, and serves on the board of the Maine chapter of the International Appalachian Trail.

This is a comprehensive description of the Maritime North East all the way to Greenland. Several wriiters have contributed to the book, many with highly personal experiences and opinions.The book covers history, archeology, wildlife, social issues, industry and trades and economic issues for each section of the coasts going north.When the book comes to Labrador and its different groups of inhabitants it starts to really become interesting. But with Labrador being inaccessible, scarsely populated and remote, it helps to have a little knowledge of history and geography before reading that part of the book.So even if I enjoyed the book, preparing for travel to Greenland, Labrador and Newfoundland, it is still a book for a special interest group.
