Many of the contributors fail to acknowledge that psychosis most likely has many causes beyond trauma. At times conclusions that psychosis is trauma based is reached with poor or outdated research given advances in neurological understanding in the past several decades. Experiences of Schizophrenia presents a much more integrated understanding of the complexities of the spectrum of schizophrenia disorders in relation to trauma and other psychopathology while acknowledging potential biological predispositions and contributions. The connection between aspects of psychosis and dissociation is interesting although a much clearer definition of dissociation and the particular aspects of dissociation considered in studies of comparison would have been helpful.
This is a source book for the advanced student or professional needing a research history on the subjects of psychosis, trauma, and dissociation as they relate to severe and complex pathology. The book contains 24 chapters written by 50 authors who are research experts in the field. The book contains references at the conclusion of each chapter and the book contains over 1000 references in all. The range of research findings and theoretical discussions cover Freud, Kraepelin, Bleuler,etc. to 2009 and the DSM-IV.
I really liked this book. It did a superb job shedding light on the differences in experiencing psychosis and psychotic symptoms between those who suffer from schizophrenia and those who suffer from the dissociative disorders.
