While I am a fan of the "Event Group" series and I absolutely DO like the premise of "The Mountain", in my opinion the first 80% of the book is PLODDING; an agonizingly slow read. I almost deleted it from my Kindle a few times because what amounts to the backstory behind the expedition to Mt Ararat was long, drawn out, dull, and boring. Once I got to the 75% range and the expedition reached it goal, the book turned into vintage Golemon -- better in my opinion than Clive Cussler and his assistant writers anymore. But wait, there's more: Another big problem I have with "The Mountain" was Golemon's choice of character names. The main protagonist is John Henry Thomas -- three "first" names right there, and the principal supporting actor is Jessop "Jessy" Taylor. Maybe it was me, but I had a difficult time separating "Thomas" from "Taylor" as the author switched from calling the characters by their given names to their family names. Golemon did, too, because I counted three incidents where the wrong family name was written in the story context; Taylor for when Thomas was clearly intended, or vice-versa. In addition, two minor characters, both lieutenants and officers of the USS Argo, had last names ending in "F". When outlining the book and working on early character development, how difficult is it to spend some time with a phone book and come up with markedly different and unique names for characters, so that readers don't have to have keep them separated in mind while reading, because the author is so unimaginative that names character names all begin with different letters, both given and family names. Golemon can certainly keep writing Event Group novels, he just needs a new editor.

This was a slow-moving story and wasn't as exciting as some of the others in the series . I like the characters in the story line but I thought it could've moved a bit faster.... the pace was too slow for me. I like the way the story was wrapped up but I'm a stickler for details and the dates that were given at the end of the story were so ridiculously wrong it bugged me to no end... Noting that Jessy died in 1927 at the age of 77 would have made him only 14-15years old when the story took place..... huh???? Same with Grey dog who supposedly died in 1936 at the age of 70 … That was mean that he was born in 1866 - after the story took place...Again - huh???

I was wondering where the author was headed with the Event Group after the all that happened in the previous book Overlord. I was hoping to see what was next after the near cataclysmic events of Overlord. When I started reading The Mountain I was a little disappointed as it actually was an Origins/prequel to the Event Group. set back during the civil war. As I said, I was a little disappointed (at first) but I just have to say after finishing the book last night that it was absolutely one of the best stories that I have ever read. The characters were so well thought out and developed and the individual story/subplots with those characters where just great. As for the story itself, It took a while for things to really get rolling but once they did, it was a very entertaining ride.I don't want to give anything away but if you have read all of the event group books, you have to read this as it basically how the event group got its start. And it is a very VERY interesting start!Happy reading!

First may I say to you, ignore the reviews that say this is a remake of an old book ! Obviously they did NOT read this book !!!!!I am in the middle of reading " The Mountain" And so far have found it with a slow beginning, but it has started to pick up pace as I am entering into the adventure part of the book. It has a very VERY slow beginning !!! But I have read All of Golemons books right from the get-go, so I knew hewas getting to something interesting eventually. Interesting take on the Civil War, can really Feel the emotions of what these people went through, which was a living hell !! Even though this book really isn't about the Event Group itself, it is leading towards it's very beginning. Now that I've gotten through the slow beginning, learning new Characters, I am looking forward to the second half of this book.

I love the Event series books. Overlord was probably my favorite. And when I finished that and picked this one up, I was a little disappointed with a story in the past rather than the events after Overlord. However, this one did not disappoint. This one takes place at the time of the Civil War where two friends, fighting on opposite sides of the war, take their soldiers to Turkey to look for the Ark. This, in essence, was the first ever Event group mission.

I began reading Golemon's The Event Series with his first book and find I can barely wait for the next book each time I complete reading one. Since I'm so familiar with the Event Group's history, parts of this book are redundant. The price does not reflect this; however, despite the price and redundancy, it is very good writing. I'm sure I'll reread this book as I have all the others of the series. The second or third revisit, always is as interesting as the first reading.

I just finished reading The Mountain, with a sense of relief. Many times I was tempted to give up on it, but stuck it out. I am a big fan of the Event Group series, and looked forward to reading this book, but was very disappointed. In essence, it wasn't really about the Group, and probably should have been a stand alone book. It read more like a slow moving period piece mixed with a history lesson. I will move on to the next book in the series and hope Mr. Goleman will get back to the exciting adventures of the Event Group and the characters we love.
