I have been suggesting this book to people since the day I first began to read it. If you are the caregiver - this is a close to a how-to manual that you will get.Highly recommended.One suggestion: As you will use this more as a reference book rather than reading it cover to cover, I suggest getting the paper version rather than the Kindle version. The paper version enable you to more easily move quickly around the book.

tTHIS IS MORE OF A TEXTBOOK-----NOT FOR FAMILIES ! DON'T KNOW IF I'LL EVER GET IT READ ! TOO LONG !

This book is hard to get through, primarily because there are sections describing the suffering of dementia from the patient's perspective. When you're already grieving this diagnosis, it feels even worse to read paragraphs upon paragraphs of terror and isolation, of course imagining your own loved one going through the same thing.The sections on how to cope as a caregiver are dry but informative. A difficult truth about dementia is that you can't predict which symptoms will appear, so this book covers all of them. And it goes over some of the science behind the more frustrating symptoms, like when the patient is in total denial about their condition, which definitely helps the caregiver cope.They say this book is the bible of caring for a loved one with dementia/Alzheimers. I wish it was easier to navigate but it's definitely the most helpful guide I've read so far.

I wish I had bought this book as soon as my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My father has received very little information from my mother's doctors on what to expect as her disease progresses and more importantly, how to deal with these issues. When I received the book, I looked up her latest problem in the index, dizziness, and turned right to an informative section that helped clarify what's going on with my mom. The bathing sections are helpful for understanding and thus coping with those issues. I appreciate the depth of topics and detail for symptoms that Alzheimer's patients can have; I am also grateful for the huge emphasis on respite care for the caregiver. This gives my siblings and me another avenue of discussion in getting help for my dad, who like many spouses has his own health issues.My only problem with the current hardback edition is the text size - it's a small font and closely spaced. I would hope that future revisions would enlarge the print a bit, especially since this book is generally going to be read by adults who appreciate a little larger print.Overall I highly recommend it - I've been flipping between this book and the Mayo Clinic book on Alzheimer's, and while they both have excellent information, I feel that this book is the better one for detailed information on the myriad little things that crop up with care of a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

This is the "Bible" as pertains to Alzheimer's/dementia. I read this book as one in our family was experiencing the disease slowly (at first) in her later years. The family could not accept or admit this was happening for so long that I needed to learn for myself from real experts. The writing is perfect for conveying the whole story, with many ifs ands and buts that make each person's experience somewhat different. In addition to the technical aspects of the body and brain as one proceeds through this disease, the book is filled with actual experiences of caregivers, patients, and doctors to give a well-rounded idea of what we are all going through, including lots of ideas on what to do about it to make life more tolerable - as much as we can. A lot of what the book is saying is that we must accept what is happening, do all we can to alleviate suffering - physical and mental - for patient, family, and any other caregivers that might be involved. I've given this book to 2 others who are involved with Alzheimer's/dementia because I think it is a must for people to understand this and deal with it as they can.

I wish my family and I had received this book when my mother was first diagnosed with dementia 2 years ago. We wandered along this path with little guidance from her g.p. or even from the (truly excellent) neurologist at the highly reputable medical school. I have read answers to questions which have been nagging at me for months (probably years now). The resources at the back are also helpful for the non-social-worker-non-medical-person which I am and which most family members of dementia patients are. This should be called, "What To Expect When a Family Member Has Dementia or Alzheimer's". It is truly a must read for anyone who has a family member with this tragic, difficult illness.

i have read many books about aging parents and dementia. this is by far the best book written on the subject. i recommend it to everyone that is dealing with this disease. whether your loved one in just starting on this journey or they are at the end, reading this will help you. it helps you understand that their actions are not them. it's the disease. it helps you not take the things they say and do to you personally. it's still hard... but it helps me sort my feelings out. you can read the chapter that you are dealing with at the time and also read it cover to cover. i recommend you read it cover to cover first, then refer back to what you are dealing with at the time.

I have to say that this book is awesome for Shadowrun 4th edition. It gives a lot of additional details on Seattle of the future, and the information on the different places saves me a lot of time when running the game by not having to think of stuff. It also helps to add a little flavor and consistency to the game by giving out some unique locations that players will remember. Additionally, the stories in the book also give a great indication of what life is like in these different areas. My only wish is that the maps were a little more detailed as to where some of the major locations are when the addresses are given in each entry. The main maps are just blank white with some markings for highways, geographical features, and a mall or two. Most of the time I just guess on how long it takes to get somewhere or what road they are nearby, so make sure you get some real world maps to help get an idea of where stuff is.

Outstanding reference book for any Shadowrun player. Kenson is one of the best RPG writers out there today, and this is terrific. I highly recommend it for all GMs and players of Shadowrun 4th edition or 20th anniversary edition.

Good Resource to have if you are playing a setting in 2072+ Seattle. It has lots of good fluff and information in it. Its not required but will definitely help you get a better feel for the Seattle area.

The layout of the book is reminiscent of the old 1st edition Seattle guided and in some cases delves deeper than its predecessor which was set in 2050. Like the 20th anniversary main book Shadowrun 20th Anniversary Edition this guide is printed and illustrated in full color with lots of side blurbs that tell the deeper stories behind topics in the setting. As always cannon shadow run Npc's give their colorful and often colored cometary on the subject as you read it as a Jack point file (A matrix site for elite shadow runners to discuss the Biz for those not familiar with the game or setting). This book also suffers non of the binding issues that earlier 4th ed products suffered.If you Run the game Get this book the content makes runner havens look like no more that a shallow puddle next to the great lakes.If you a player the vast majority of the content is stuff that you should know. I enjoyed the ideas in this book (though I really didn't learn anything new) and in general I liked that the author worked to make the science approachable. The author obviously loves language and finds ways to bring pop culture references in to help non-scientifically minded readers understanding. I do think that this will in the longer term give the book a "dated" feel and someday make it unreadable by younger audiences. The problem I had was that at times the author seemed to be more focused on finding cute ways to say things than on the ideas themselves. The biggest reason for this seemed to be to avoid scaring any unwary readers with "math" or "hard" science. The best example of this comes right at the end when the author talks about the Drake equation. Rather than just give the equation and tell what the variables mean (to me a wonderful way to understand how astronomy intersects historical sciences), the author mentions, almost off-handedly, a few of the variables and then only really explains the last one. In all, a good way to bring the science fearful into a basic understanding that could be nurtured into interest or even love. However, probably not a book for someone who has seen their way through less flowery, more information dense tomes.

The author has to be in the top 10% of all I.Q.s. The attempt to personalize "science and scientists" by cutesipie finishes to many major statements gets a little distracting after awhile. But, the points made and the education enhancement I received made putting up with her 'popular' writing style.

Excellent book for anyone who was interested in science as a child and had it slowly leached out of them by the public school system. This book provides and starting point for the adult whose interest has been rekindled. Her writing is a bit facile, but it's still a great read.

Entertaining, enlightening, clever. Really terrific narrative that puts much of the science world in a pragmatic easy read. Atoms, molecules, space, energy, evolution....this book covers it all.

Sometimes the best explainers of a topic are outsiders or laymen, rather than practitioners in the field. The author isn't a scientist so she can still see complex topics from the layman's viewpoint. This is, simply put, a great book. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of science (what is the doppler effect?) but the philosophy behind science (why does the scientific method do such a good job at explaining our world?)The writing is breezy and not stilted, using metaphors instead of math to explain difficult topics. The chapter on evolutionary biology is my favorite, and covers not only the mechanics of evolution but the controversy, and explains the tenets (and bad reasoning) of the Intelligent Design movement. After reading this chapter it seemed like a veil lifted from my eyes, and I got excited and yelled, "I get it!"A couple of my favorite quotes:From the chapter on evolutionary biology: "Natural selection is the force that transforms drift and randomness into the gift of extravagance. It takes the doctrinaire sloth of the second law of thermodynamics, the tendency of every system to get frowzier over time, and hammers it into a magic, all-purpose, purpose-making machine that turns around and breaks entropy at the knees."From the chapter on astronomy, talking about the search for extraterrestrials: "We are such indefatigable telecommunicators that the world and its 6.5 billion content providers don't feel like enough, and we can't help but wonder, Who else can we call?"The book is wonderful and definitely is worth reading several times. My only gripes: there is the occasional reference to some current pop culture celebrity, and I think this will make an otherwise timeless book seem dated in a few years. Also I think that the book would have been enhanced by an occasional illustration. She routinely works in cutesy little rhymes and sayings that started to drive me crazy. As the concepts dealt with became more complex, her penchant for the poetic was really irritating. She would be talking about... I don't know, atoms maybe... and she would say something like "the size of a bird or this word or all the nerds in class." Please remember you're writing for adults who are intelligent and choosing to further educate themselves about science. I don't want to be driven off by cute.In the end, I still think she didn't quite simplify some of the deeper concepts to a level I was really comfortable with. Maybe I am truly a science idiot, but I doubt it.Verdict: C-

I love her work. She's one of the best Science writers around. Well-informed, presents the info very well. She has a sneaky sense of humor that keeps me chuckling while I learn.

I was very disappointed by a novel, “Motion to Kill,” that was heavily reviewed mostly in glowing terms. In fact, though I understand we all have diverse reading "likes" I was shocked at all the 5 point reviews and their expressions of "love" for this genuinely mediocre novel. This is a very quick read because there is nothing you can do but follow along while the somewhat childish protagonist, Lou Mason, who though in his early 30s, acts like a teenager with pimples. While Goldman may have a future, he needs some serious practice.Here's what I didn't like about Mr. Goldman's book: 1. Too many characters with too many roles--there was no way to figure out the storyline without Lou, the hero. 2. It took Lou and several other characters to tell me what was going on, since the narrative was convoluted and filled with too many deaths, characters, and a difficult, tortuous plot. 3. The conversations are stilted and unbelievable. People just don't talk like this. Its more written prose than dialogue. 4. I just finished the novel and I'm still not clear what the novel is really about. It certainly wasn't a thriller and it had no courtroom drama, both of which are hinted at in the title. 4. There was no way with all the players and activities ongoing to know who was doing what to whom; even though Lou is required to reveal it to us because no one would be able to follow the plot line without his assistance. 5. His relationship and dialogue with Kelly is so childish and doesn't merit a romp in bed, even if it was just lust, because that never entered the picture either. Kelly doesn't come across as a sympathy sex partner, so we're left with another "huh?" 6. Though Kelly is sometimes mature and likable, she can also lack empathy and become incomprehensible. 7. Though the novel did not garner my allegiance in any way, I kept waiting to find a character that I could get my arms around. I found no one to root for. 8. None of the characters were fleshed out; I think this is due to the sheer number. 9. I like my protagonist flawed but not so much that he needs serious therapy, which, as it turns out, most of the characters flashing throughout this story do. 10. I don’t enjoy a novel that has to be explained to me by the main character in long boring observations. I prefer novels where the plot is revealed in actions and direct observationsOn the plus side: 1. Mr. Goldman goes for some unchartered territory and perhaps pushes some buttons that we might possess but suppress. 2. It’s a quick read if you’re not constantly referring back to find out who the character under consideration is. 3. Mr. Goldman has potential and he likely could have had two novels within this one alone. 4. There were some great plot twists and surprises and you’ll never figure out who did what to whom without some assistance from the author and Lou Mason.

No way is this book in the same league as Lee Child and Michael Connelly, two of my favorite authors. And, yes, I gave Goldman a chance outside of this comparison, because I think every author deserves his own voice, but he just didn't pull it off. No grab-you-from-the-start-and-not-let-go story line, no great character development--Goldman tries too hard to make his hero sound trite, snarky, and flip, and it just falls flat--and poor writing; Goldman "tells" way too much. "Mason was surprised," "Mason doubted," "Mason worried," etc. The style of "non-showing" writing creates no emotional connection with a character, and so I didn't care about Mason's future. The story also didn't seem realistic right from the beginning. There seemed way too much interaction between Mason and Sheriff Kelly, considering law enforcement and lawyers are often natural adversaries...but mainly it felt like an info dump. Overall, I'm disappointed, and I only gave this book the 3 stars I did because I didn't finish it, and thought it deserved the benefit of the doubt.

Lou Mason is a lawyer who tries to be smart with one-liners, but more likely to end with egg on his face. Yet, he is relentless in his pursuit of answers. Friendships and loyalty wrestle within him, but it is truth that emerges the victor.Romance plays a minor role, but not the world of relationships. The intricate web of relationships is cleverly woven into the story and ultimately it is about relationships that govern the characters' responses. For Mason, truth supersedes the value of relationships and his pursuit of truth makes him question even the loyalty of his best friend.A gripping thriller with sufficient twists which are all cleverly tied up in the end leaving a sense of satisfaction. The characters are believable and the writing crisp. Some clever undercurrents of humor add to am enjoyable read.Highly recommended

The junior member of a prestige’s law firm rousted from his slumber on the beach finds himself at the center of a murder investigation. Bodies drop quickly in this twisting story of greed and betrayal as our hero unravels why he has become the killer’s next target. Troubled by a trail he lost and spurred on by his mother’s folksy wisdom he pulls on the threads of evidence. At times, the threads yield a nugget of truth, and sometimes the blazing guns of the killer’s henchmen. Laced with dry humor, and for the most part well paced, the climax seemed drawn out and a convoluted attempt to get out of a painted-in corner.

This is a legal thriller with lots of murder, several cases, and lots of characters. Lou Mason discovers the dead body of his partner in a lake at the firm’s partner retreat. When he learns it was murder, Lou tries to investigate to figure out who the killer is and why. Is it client-related? Is it someone in the firm? Is the death of another partner related? Is there more than one killer? There are lots of things going on in this book!This book is pretty complex and I found it a bit hard to follow at the beginning but as the investigation moved along, I got more drawn into it. Some parts were very good with lots of suspense, while others were mostly conversations. I felt sorry for Lou that he didn’t get out of the firm sooner and felt bad for the sheriff too. I liked the ending.

Joel Goldman is an excellent crime/legal writer, and I really like the character Lou Mason. After reading this first book in the series, I was delighted to discover there are more. I am on my way to read another one as soon as I finish writing this review, which should tell you how much I enjoyed it. The plot was stellar, with enough twists and turns to keep me on my toes, a dash of humor thrown in here and there among the bodies, and the denouement (in my opinion) perfect. My only question is: why am I only now discovering a legal thriller writer who is every bit as good as Grisham, Turow, and the other heavyweights in my favorite genre?

I was thrilled to read of the talented women recruited (and the novel means by which this happened) to carry out the initial excavation.I admit that the first part of the book, though interesting, seemed almost like an introductory textbook, in spite of the fabulous finds at the first cave site. But once the Dinaledi cave story got going, I was spellbound!Berger's effort to bring my field into the 21st century are vital. Had the opportunities he has helped to create been available sooner, not only would we know more about our origins, but many more good minds would be participating in that story. Too many promising anthropologists are forced to move on for lack of opportunity. The changes in process and access instituted by Berger and Hawk will bring much needed attention and funding to Paleoanthropology, as well as stimulate a host of new careers.This story is a win-win, for science and the public.

Ever since I read African Genesis as a young man, fascinated by the early work of Raymond Dart and the Leakey's, I have endeavored to attempt to keep up with the methods, techniques and discoveries of paleoanthropology and the many attendant scientific disciplines it necessarily functions in conjunction with. As a forensic pathologist I have a rudimentary basis of understanding, but this book does not require a rigorous science background. It is a thoroughly absorbing account of some of the most seminal discoveries of hominids in recent years. It's a lively, accessible story not only of the discoveries but of the intrepid team who discovered them - and the difficulties they faced. This is a superstar group dedicated to divining the origin of us. I don't see how anyone can resist this account - or fail to have an abiding interest in the origins of man.

If you are an armchair paleo-anthropologist (and I am, having got caught up in the Leakey discoveries when I was young), you will find this a very engaging recount of some incredible finds that have caused us to consider what we really know about ancient humanoid. Regardless of criticisms of Berger’s self promotion, I felt that as author he managed considerable objectivity and if his crowd-sourcing of research is not as earth-shaking as the book at times make it seem, he makes a compelling case that paleo-anthropology could benefit from increased inclusiveness.However my most important observation is the book was fund to read. Almost like a novel, and it was one of those books where I was sad it was finished. I enjoyed it that much.

I guess it's a bit more like 4.5 for me but why quibble. The only thing in this book I didn't appreciate was the cliffhanger at the end. :) The fact that it's possible to have a cliffhanger like that in a what is, essentially, a science book, is something I'm very grateful about. This discipline has been stagnant for way too long. In all seriousness, though, I wish it was longer, with a bit more details on the expedition and the people who participated in it. It's not all about the fossils, at least it isn't for me. I'd love to have more backstory.

This is a book about a pair of recent discoveries (with a hint at a third) of early ancestors (possibly) of modern humans. Since the discoveries were only made in the last few years, there is a lot more research needed before the findings become definite. This book walks you through the two discoveries as they are occurring and gives a modern day look at the workings of paleontologists and universities as they try discover some of our early history.This book also gives a good history of some of the more famous discoveries such as 'Lucy' and the Flores (hobbits). The author has met and/or worked with some of the more famous scientists working in the field right now. He is a strong believer is getting the information and the fossils available to as many people as possible so that everyone can see where we (may have) come from.The reason I only give the book 4 stars instead of 5 despite the great content is that I feel that in many places in the book, the author is being a little self-serving in trying to show himself as trying to change the system of paleontology while he is in the midst of making these discoveries. I do not believe that he should be trying to re-fight his political battles while telling the lay reader about the science and history of such discoveries.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the history of the discoveries of our ancestors well at the same time, seeing some new discoveries being made. The book was an easy read with short chapters which allow you to take the information in small bites which helps to avoid being overwhelmed.

A well-written and engaging book. I was somewhat familiar with the subject already, but it was nice to read the first-hand account of the discovery. The only critique I have is one that I often have of this genre of first-person science books for a broader audience- the author spends a fair amount of time discussing their critics but always in a somewhat patronizing manner. They are understandably passionate about their find and their work, but a clear statement of what their critics were concerned about and a straightforward response would make for a better book.If you're reading this review and enjoy this book, I'd also recommend The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story for another exciting tale of anthropological discovery, written by an author with a background in fiction. This sense of narrative helps to present a more cohesive story.
