Road to Valor is about the true story of Gino Bartali, a two time Tour de France champion who spent the WWII years transporting documents in connection with a Catholic Church organization to save Jewish refugees from Nazi occupiers and their Fascist collaborators.This is a very well researched work and consists really of two stories. One is the story of Gino Bartali's life, including his youth, his family life, and, of course, his bicycle racing activities. The other is about Italy both during Mussolini's reign and during the post war period.Gino Bartali's 1948 Tour victory is portrayed as having helped lift Italy out of its turmoil at the time, as there were riots between Communist and non-Communist factions at those years. Anyhow, a good read for cycling and Gino Bartali fans.

He was a boy who came from a relatively poor family living in a small town near Florence. He was able to go to a school in Florence, but had to buy a bicycle for transportation. He worked and saved his money, and was finally able to buy a fourth-hand bike.It changed his life. The boy became Gino Bartali, one of the great cycling legends. In “Road to Valor: A True Story of World War II Italy, the Nazis, and the Cyclist Who Inspired a Nation,” Aili and Andres McConnon tell Bartali’s story.Actually, they tell three interlocking stories.The first is Gino Bartali the great cyclist, who won the Tour de France twice – with each win separated by a decade – a record for time in-between wins that’s still unbroken.The second is Gino Bartali the Italian resistance messenger, who at the behest of the Archbishop of Florence smuggled fake identity documents all over northern Italy, hidden in his bicycle. What he did saved the lives of hundreds of Jews. He even hid a Jewish family from the Nazis in his basement in Florence.The third is Gino Bartali, the man whose impossible victory in a Tour de France stage in the Alps helped to stop exploding violence in Italy between the Communist and Christian Democratic parties. As one observer pointed out, men who had been trying to kill each other suddenly turned their attention northward, and celebrated Bartali’s victory together. Bartali had been 21 minutes behind the Tour leader, and in one stage erased the difference. He powered on to win the 1948 Tour, despite all of sports journalists and cycling fans who considered him a “washed-up old man” at 33.The story of helping the Italian resistance and saving the lives of Jews was learned only fairly recently. Bartali, who died in 2000 at the age of 85, never talked about until late in life, when he told his oldest son some of what happened. Others, especially the Jewish families he helped to save, corroborated his story. His cycling around Tuscany, Umbria and other Italian locales could always be explained as “training.” But secreted in the tubes of his bicycle were false identity papers, to help protect Jews and also to help many escape.The McConnons tell a riveting, wonderful story. Bartali wasn’t a saint; he had his human frailties like the rest of us. But he had great courage, and he acted on that courage – to save lives, and to win an impossible race. I became interested in reading Gino Bartali's story after viewing "My Italian Secret". I am not disappointed. The writing is clear, concise, understandable and informative. I am discovering facts of a boy who grew up poor and became a man of distinction and valor. I'm learning facts about cycling of which I was not aware. I am learning that Mr. Bartali was able to combine his athletics with a desire to make a difference. Throughout the reading, I do not have the impression that Mr. Bartali was looking for heroism; rather, I am impressed that a poor man with a generous nature looked toward improving the quality of his family's life and at the same time participate in a sport he loved from childhood.That he won the two Tours de France made him a hero in society; that he mindfully used his celebrity to quietly make a moral difference to a people who suffered and lost so much has made him a hero in humanitarianism. This is what I learned from "Road To Valor", a book I'm hard pressed to put down. This is not a sappy adulteration. Its authenticity and research is impressive and leaves this reader appreciative of the authors' work.

I read Assisi Underground, which was where I first heard of Gino Bartoli. I wanted to know his story. So I read Road To Valor. The book is superbly written. You know the outcome before you start reading it, and yet the book has you at the edge of your seat. It gives such excellent description of Italy at the time, economically and politically. And Bartoli, what a portrayal! I would recommend this for anyone who has an interest in bike racing, Italy, or WWII.

This is the latest of a string of bicycling books that I recently read. I also recently read, and enjoyed, A Dog in a Hat, Bobke II, Domestique, One Day Ahead, and the Bike Snob's first book. Road to Valor was in some ways the best of the lot. I try to not spoil a book for those who read my reviews, but I can tell you that I would not have enjoyed Road to Valor as much if I had not read Dog in a Hat, Bobke II, and Domestique. The writing in Valor is top-notch, and the research seems to be excellent. The epilogue adds a great deal to the book. Dang, there's a lot I want to tell you, but my "lips" are sealed. Read this book!I bicycle about 290 days a year, 15,000 miles in the last 2 years, all road bikes, some vintage. A huge photo of the Eiffel Tower is mounted in the room where I watch the Tour de France and other bicycle races on television. Just so you know where I come from.

This is an excellent, well researched novel about an incredible athlete and WWII upstander. I was previously unaware of Gino Bartali before I read this book and about his activities during WWII as an upstander. I highly recommenced this novel. Great for a student or anyone interested in WWII for a history class.

James C.Vanderkam has gifted the world of Bible Scholarship with a fascinating and comprehensive study of the Second Temple Period. Impeccable scholarship and ample notes and Bibliography make this book a "must" for anyone interested in learning more of this important period in Jewish History. Written in a style that makes the period come alive for the reader, "An Introduction to Early Judaism" is not only informative but also engrossing and will provide hours of pleasant reading. A really fine book and well worth a "Five Star Rating"

Initially, I was worried that the book would be too broad. Fortunately, as I allowed Vanderkam to speak to my mind, I began to hear wisdom. Unlike some introductions, Vanderkam presents a broad spectrum of summaries and thoughts from the Second Temple Period. He does it in such a way that does not demand extreme smarts of the reader. At the same time, he doesn't assume his reader is stupid. He writes fluidly and to the point.Based on his writing, I would assume that he is a fantastic professor. So, that said, I may just have to apply to a Masters program at Notre Dame in Ancient Judaism.If you are looking for a basic book and introduction to early Judaism, this is perfect. It deals with the primary sources and is not tainted with theological goals, as that is not the purpose of the book. I hope this helps you out!

This is an awesome introduction to the extra-biblical material in the Apocrypha and the Pseudepigrapha. Very helpful to look at material that influenced the writers of the scriptures which are in the Canon. Not only gives a synopsis of many of the books, but also a history of the period from 400 B.C.E. to the turn of the millennium.

I have about 300 books on Near East and Jewish history and Professor VanderKam's book is among my most favorites. Professor VanderKam is a highly respected historian and authority on Jewish history and he has a wonderful way of writing in an enjoyable and understandable way. Others like to impress themselves with unnecessarily complicated prose, but, Professor VanderKam clearly places a priority on conveying his vast knowledge in a sophisticated yet accessible manner. I cannot recommend this book too highly.

Loved the book! Easy to read, great chronological narrative of the 400 years of "God's silence" prior to Jesus' birth that gave the context of Judaism in Jesus' day. A great help if you're into Bible study and would like to read the gospels in their historical context. Also great as an introduction to seminary students.

There is excellence and scholarship to this text. The historical is treated with specifics, succintly. This was a required textbook, I felt a friend who may not have known of its existence and wished an overview might want. It covered the subject very well. My professor is referred to in the Introduction because he suggested VanderKam would be perfect for the task and authoratative. I recommend it to any beginning student unkowing of the breadth of this topic. It's a springboard to comprehensive study with the original text translations as a companion. It stands as an outline to the subject for a beginner. Great source!

James VanderKam has proven himself one of the foremost authorities on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the vast literature of Second Temple Judaism - two areas which typically overwhelm the average research student and biblical scholar.Here in this accessible volume (easy to follow, 234 pages), VanderKam provides a succinct overview of the sea of literature and lays the foundation to eliminate the enormous task of getting a hold of the literature from the Second Temple period. It is helpful (especially trying to cut through for the specific task of research) to have a resource which provides a simple and straightforward explanation of the whos, whats and wheres of documents which are filled with people, places and symbols quite foreign to most everything else you learn in church and typical coursework for New Testament studies.But it remains difficult to overestimate the importance of this literature, as it provides the closest and clearest information of how Judaism interpreted their own Scriptures at the time when the Christian movement emerged. This book is a wonderful introduction and would be a great addition to an introduction or survey course.

This is a very good book.It is initially based on his lecture at a Desiring God conference in 2004 and greatly expanded.He has such a wise outlook and helping concern for individuals who struggle with these issues and those who care for them.Very timely book.I recommend this book very highly.

Empire of the Imagination is a decent, but short, Biography of Gary's Gygax's life. It has a few shortcomings, but ultimately is a satisfactory work.Just some quick background on myself before I get into the review--I was a friend of Gary in his later years. You can find my name or initials on much of the work in the latter half of the bibliography, mostly in the days when he was doing stuff with publishers Clark and Cheunault (and Mongoose). I'm still friendly with Gail. I wanted to make sure I'm upfront about this before doing a review, because obviously I have my own biases, but I also want to make sure I'm not dismissed as a "random guy on the Internet" either.The book itself is presented in a series of vignettes--a notable point in Gary's life with some dialog and then reflections on how he got to that point. The book does a decent job of giving an overview of how things were going in Gary's life at each point. It's clear the author has taken a lot of time and tried to compile a lot of different sources into a narrative. The stories are told in an entertaining style, and I enjoyed some of the new insights into Gary's earlier life, like reading about the "Big Fish Story", or why Gary stopped driving.Based on reading this book, it's fairly accurate, and doesn't conflict with a lot of both what I've read and the private stories Gary told me, so I think he does a decent job of getting his history right. And a lot of these stories are backed up by the public record as well. I trust that Witwer did a very good job on this.The main thing I like is that Witwer does a great job of producing footnotes for the book and bibliographies. There's footnotes for each chapter. He draws upon a lot of public statements made by Gary, including his long running threads at ENWorld. The Appendixes also give a rather comprehensive bibliography of Gary's gaming work, and there's another with a dated timeline of important events of Gary's life. The very last chapters Witwer spends discussing Gary's influence on modern fiction and how gaming had changed the world, influenced popular culture, etc. I was very prepared to be disappointed since some biographies don't go into this amount of detail.There are, however, some flaws. In some cases, using the narrative device leads to some creative interpretations of the facts. There are some things I don't think he would have ever said. (I cringed when I read "What Would Conan Do?", as well as the "grim reaper" figure asking Gary to play chess on his deathbed). My personal preference would have been less "creative interpretation" and more analysis, especially where the creative process occurred. Also, he frames sections with Gary as a player in a Dungeon, and calls these section "Levels", something that I think just makes the biography less serious and a bit too "cute" for my tastes. But that's a minor criticism based on personal taste.The book unfortunately is short...at 300 pages, to me, the book sacrifices depth for breadth. I'm not sure if Witwer was under any sort of limitation in terms of scope, but because of the quickness it feels like we are just getting highlights. There's no real attempt to try to delve deeper into Gary's personality, or to analyze his creative phases.The direct interview sources that the author has interviewed directly are surprisingly limited. Witwer interviews a few key figures but ignores a few others. One notable absence is Gail Gygax--considering that she was became closest person in his life (one could argue his True Love), this absence seems jarring, especially when we get to areas around the divorce and especially the post-TSR days. Although to be fair in that respect, Gail has not been very willing to be interviewed, and I don't know if Witwer attempted to reach out to her but was rebuffed, or just didn't attempt to contact her. Regardless of who is at fault, this hurts the biography, especially since a lot of his primary emphasis is on what family members have written.He also doesn't talk to many creative collaborators, out of the existing list, Mentzer's the only one who'd be considered one. The absence of interviews with folks like Rob Kuntz, Flint Dille, Dave Newton, Jon Creffield, and Jeff Talenian are all felt. Additionally, it's surprising that the author didn't try to get alternative perspectives from those who might have been critical or opposed to Gary, say for instance, somebody from the Arneson or Blume camps, or people who worked at TSR and were critical of Gary, just to make sure all perspectives were covered. I think that's the type of research you really need to do for a comprehensive Biography.There are also a few curious choices--why did Witwer choose Elmore and Easley in his limited pool of interviewees, considering they were more part of the art department than the gaming departments, over other folks?Another troubling thing is that the author has referenced a few things that I know Gary has denied over the years, even in private, without attributing the source. For instance, he mentioned Gary's rumored cocaine usage, but I've never seen Gary acknowledged that publicly, and I once asked him privately if he ever used that drug (he admitted to using "benzies and dexies", and a one time use of LSD--which he called "Lousy, Stupid Drug", but denied using cocaine). I'm not saying this didn't happen, but in this particular case, there's no real quote or footnote to confirm this and more importantly, who said he was using drugs. This bugs me because the accusation of that was the one time I saw Gary actually threaten legal action against somebody for suggesting that he used cocaine, and it would be nice if the book had attributed a direct quote from somebody on this subject.I will say that Witwer is willing to expand and elaborate on stuff. A blogger's review of the rough cut (actually the same review on Amazon Joseph Bloch posted here) made it sound like everything after TSR was reduced to a few paragraphs, but it looks like in this initial cut there were a few extra chapters. Also, after discussing it with Jon Creffield, Witwer did seem to approach him after I encouraged Jon to write to him. I do hope he considers an expanded edition and interviews a lot more people and can add depth to the book.As it stands, because of these omissions and flaws, I can give the book no more than 3 stars, but it deserves 3 stars because where it succeeds, it succeeds well. To use a gaming analogy, it's like the "Bell Curve" in the original DMG--he comes up as the average center. I can only hope the next printing or a follow-up comes up more to the right of the bell curve. Given that he's a new author, I think it's a decent work, and I hope second or third printings have the opportunity to expand on what's been covered here.Amazon specific information: I purchased this on the Kindle format, and it was on my Kindle right when I woke up today. The Kindle format has a flaw in the index, for some reason on the Kindle Fire HD the index doesn't appear to fit the page, the beginning of each index entry is cropped--hopefully this can be repaired and updated. Beyond that, there's no other flaws that I have found with the e-book format

A couple of years ago I read the book Of Dice and Men, a look back at the early days of Dungeons & Dragons, and, those of us nerds who played it. I was an avid player of the game back in the mid to late 70s, and have continued a fascination with the world(s) created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, the original duo behind the game. I’ve gone on to play computer based games, both early ones that were limited to being installed on your computer and played by one or a couple of people, and on, to MMORPGs, the massive universes created online like Everquest and Worlds of Warcraft.The earlier book I mentioned was mostly focused on the game itself, and the gamers who took it and ran with it. There was plenty of biographical information about the creators, but you couldn’t call it biography. Michael Witwer’s Empire of Imagination takes another run at it. As he says in the introduction, he couldn’t believe when he started researching the book that no one had ever written a biography of Gary Gygax, who, while not a household name except to those of us in the gaming world, created something that went on to be the foundation for things we take for granted in modern day life, everything from the use of computers for games, to the advent of social media. As he also points out, it’s telling, that in an episode of the pop-culture show Futurama, Gygax’s character is paired up with Lieutenant Uhura, Al Gore, and Steven Hawking – taking on the universe. The book is well written, completely engaging, and for anyone with an interest in the topic, a must read.

Just the very fact that this book exists is a wonderful thing. I feel so fortunate, to have had a chance to communicate with Gary while he was still with us. It was via email, and I was astounded when I fired off an email to his alleged email address, and it turned out to not only be valid, but the man himself answered me. We shot a few emails back and forth and I was just left in awe of the guy who was already elevated to demigod status in my life, having been an avid player of the game, but moreover, an avid reader of fantasy fiction, then just plain old, lifelong avid reader. It was all his fault. He is the reason I even know what the word demigod means. :) The guy who influenced the guys who re created human existence. Take one look at Bill Gates and you know damn well he has read the DM's guide. :)

This book covers the life of young Gary Gygax quite well. It gave me some excellent insights into the person who would one day create Dungeons, and Dragons. The author does seem to want to skip past the unflattering parts of Gary Gygax's life during adulthood however, and the gaps are noticeable. I was left wondering about Gygax's difficulties as a parent and husband and how that affected people who knew him from both work and privately. The author seems to find Gary's perspective in Gygax's youth and to a lesser extent towards the end of Gary's life, but seems to loose it during Gygax's middle years. The loss made the book feel a little incomplete to me.

About the Author

Abraham Silberschatz is the Sidney J. Weinberg Professor and Chair of Computer Science at Yale University. Prior to joining Yale, he was the Vice President of the Information Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories. Prior to that, he held a chaired professorship in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Professor Silberschatz is an ACM Fellow and an IEEE Fellow. He received the 2002 IEEE Taylor L. Booth Education Award, the 1998 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and the 1997 ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award. In recognition of his outstanding level of innovation and technical excellence, he was awarded the Bell Laboratories President's Award for three different Projects -- the QTM Project (1998), the DataBlitz Project (1999), and the NetInventory Project (2004). Professor Silberschatz' writings have appeared in numerous ACM and IEEE publications and other professional conferences and journals. He is a coauthor of the textbook Database System Concepts. He has also written Op-Ed articles for the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and the Hartford Courant, among others. Peter Baer Galvin is the chief technologist for Corporate Technologies (www.cptech.com), a computer facility reseller and integrator. Before that, Mr. Galvin was the systems manager for Brown University's Computer Science Department. He is also Sun columnist for ;login: magazine. Mr. Galvin has written articles for Byte and other magazines, and has written columns for SunWorld and SysAdmin magazines. I like reading this book. The authors did a pretty decent job taking a hard subject and writing about in a way I could understand, and organizing the sections in a way that builds your knowledge. My professor gave us a number of hard programming assignments in C that followed the book as well and reinforced that knowledge. So if you use this book within the right system, it can be very good. I don't think it would be easy for a beginner to just read however. You really need to dive into some of the things that you read about and get your hands dirty to gain the full value from this book. My graduate class was able to cover 6 chapters completely plus a spattering from a few other chapters in one semester. It was a very worthwhile class.

Very succinct book for early learners like myself (neophytes as my teacher calls us). There is the full linux kernel development book in its fifth edition, but that can be dense and frustrating for beginners. This Operating System Concepts Essentials has a great accompanying website with lots of great code examples and various resources that are very helpful.

Loving this book. Had to purchase for my Operating Systems Theory class. When I saw that the regular edition cost over 100 bucks I was ready to grit my teeth and just buy it. Then I heard about the Indian edition which was insanely cheaper so I bought it without a second thought. Shipping was fast and the book is high quality. Some people complain the pages are too thin and you can’t concentrate because the text bleeds through; while the paper is thinner, I am not distracted by the very light bleed that comes through. Maybe if you hold a single page up to the light and try to read them you’ll get distracted...As for content, this book is great. After finishing a particularly long chapter, I found myself continuing to read simply because I was feeling more curious about what the author would talk about next.This edition is great!

Had to get this book for a class. The most confusing book I have every read, typos and you will need to read over the chapters twice to get what it being said. Best to use the Powerpoint on the linked site to get the summary of each chapter or just go to the summary within the chapter. I know they author's tried well to break down the subject but it seemed at times that it was too much filler and not just enough for what need to be explained.

This is a very well written book on operating system design, multiprogramming, threads and all the great things that go on inside your computer while it runs an operating system. It requires some prerequisite knowledge of computer hardware and some programming. As other reviewers have stated, it is not a freshman level book. It is however, an excellent guide for people studying software design.It seems to be lacking in some areas, the section on semaphores was probably the worst area of the book. I had to turn to Tanenbaum's works for better information. Overall though, worthy of four stars.Unfortunately, I have to add to my review that I am deeply disappointed in the direction the publisher has taken with respect to the text. I find it distasteful that publishers have gone from printing student solutions manuals to requiring access to a web site. Fortunately, the editions have not changed that much and the questions are still available in solutions manuals of prior editions or perhaps if you are lucky, someone has a PDF of them. Likewise, leading search engines can provide sources for researching the solution to see if your answer is correct.

This book was the required reading for one of my college programming courses. The authors go in to good details about the specifics of all subjects relating to operating systems in general. Some that were notable were the use and creation of semaphore objects, threading, CPU scheduling, and disk scheduling algorithms. The semaphores and threading were particularly useful in completing the classic synchronization problem 'The Dining Philosophers' which was one of the assignments for the course. The breakdown of disk organization was another very beneficial and highly interesting topic. The book covers MAC OS, Linux, Unix, Windows, as well as some information about older systems such as DOS and CP/M. The book has generalized examples and each topic includes a good deal of theory. I do not recommend this book for people without a solid foundation of C or C++. It helps to know Assembly as well, but not necessary.

This book has been around for many editions. I really enjoyed reading it. The author has good explanations with plenty of examples.

Excellent new book! The price is much cheaper, compared to the hardcover version, but the content is the same.
